The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reported a significant repatriation effort, with more than 4,500 Indian students returning to India from Bangladesh. The neighboring country is currently experiencing severe violence in Bangladesh, which has resulted in over 100 deaths. In response, the ministry has emphasized its coordinated efforts with Bangladesh's civil aviation authorities and commercial airlines to ensure the availability of flights between the two countries. This initiative aims to provide a safe and secure passage for the returning students.
As of July 22, 2024, the MEA confirmed that the repatriation efforts have also extended to students from neighboring countries. In addition to Indian students, 500 students from Nepal, 38 from Bhutan, and one from the Maldives have sought refuge in India. This comprehensive approach underscores the ministry's commitment to supporting not only its own citizens but also those from neighboring nations in times of crisis.
The Indian missions in Bangladesh remain in constant contact with local authorities to guarantee the safety and security of Indian nationals. The MEA emphasized that the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, along with the assistant high commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Khulna, have been actively involved in arranging security escorts. These escorts ensure the safe travel of Indian nationals to border-crossing points, providing an added layer of protection during their journey home.
To further support the repatriation process, the ministry is working closely with Indian authorities to facilitate a smooth passage at land-ports and airports. This coordinated effort is designed to minimize any potential delays or complications, ensuring that the returnees can travel safely and efficiently. The MEA's proactive measures highlight its dedication to the welfare of its citizens abroad.
The ongoing violence in Bangladesh has led to the imposition of a nationwide curfew as law enforcement attempts to control the escalating clashes. These clashes have been triggered by student protests against the controversial job-quota system, which many believe to be unjust. The unrest has resulted in over 100 fatalities, further exacerbating the already tense situation in the country.
According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, there are approximately 15,000 Indian nationals in Bangladesh, including 8,500 students. The Indian missions are maintaining regular communication with these students and other Indian nationals to provide necessary welfare and assistance. This ongoing support is crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of Indian citizens amid the turmoil.
In response to the escalating violence, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has extended an offer of shelter to Bangladeshis fleeing the conflict. This gesture of goodwill aims to provide immediate relief and support to those affected by the violence. The offer reflects the strong ties between India and Bangladesh and underscores the importance of regional solidarity during crises.
The situation in Bangladesh remains tense as the country's Supreme Court has recently annulled most job quotas, which had sparked the deadly protests. The decision has intensified the unrest, leading to further clashes between protesters and law enforcement. The annulment of job quotas is seen as a significant factor contributing to the current state of violence and instability.
The Indian High Commission and assistant high commissions are continuously aiding the return of Indian nationals. They are ensuring their safe passage back home amidst the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh. These efforts highlight the Indian government's commitment to the safety and security of its citizens abroad, even in the face of challenging circumstances. The continuous assistance provided by the Indian missions is a testament to their dedication and resilience in times of crisis.
