Sambhal officials have taken action to demolish the steps of the residence belonging to SP MP Zia Ur Rehman. This move appears to be part of broader efforts to address local urban regulations or related issues in the area.
In a striking development, the entrance steps of Sambhal MP and Samajwadi Party figure Zia Ur Rehman Barq were demolished on Friday as part of the Uttar Pradesh government's extensive anti-encroachment initiative in the Deep Sari region. This move has drawn significant public attention, particularly after footage of the bulldozer operation was widely circulated online.
On the following day, security forces were seen actively participating in a campaign aimed at combating electricity theft in Sambhal, underscoring the government's commitment to addressing various legal violations within the region. The ongoing anti-encroachment actions are part of a broader campaign expected to last approximately 15 days, with the primary objective of clearing encroachments from public drainage systems in the area.
Adding to the tension, the Uttar Pradesh electricity department has recently levied a staggering fine of ₹1.91 crore against the MP, accusing him of engaging in electricity theft. This action follows an official inspection that uncovered substantial evidence of illicit power consumption at his residence. As a result of these findings, the electricity supply to Barq's home was terminated.
"We are actively conducting inspections related to electricity usage in Sambhal. The Electricity department has imposed a fine of ₹1.91 crore on the MP, in addition to disconnecting the power supply to his residence," stated Vinod Kumar, the Superintending Engineer in Sambhal, during an interview with PTI.
The allegations of power theft against Barq have led to a legal case being filed under Section 135 of the Electricity Act of 2003. This case suggests that the MP and his family may have resorted to bypassing their electricity meter in order to steal power, a serious violation of legal and ethical standards.
Moreover, Barq's father, Mamlukur Rehman Barq, has also come under scrutiny. He has been accused of threatening officials during the inspection at their residence in the Deepa Sarai area, further complicating the family's legal troubles. The inspection was carried out amid significant security presence, indicating the seriousness with which authorities are treating this matter.
To add to the controversy, Rehman has been implicated in a police investigation related to the violent events that took place in Sambhal on November 24. This incident, which resulted in the deaths of four local individuals, occurred during a court-ordered survey of the historically significant Shahi Jama Masjid, highlighting ongoing tensions in the area.
This situation illustrates a critical intersection of political leadership, legal accountability, and public safety. The actions taken by the Uttar Pradesh government reflect an effort to enforce regulations and uphold the law, regardless of an individual's political status. As the community grapples with these developments, the implications for local governance and public trust will undoubtedly unfold in the coming days.
As investigations continue, local residents and observers are closely watching how these events will influence not only the MP's political career but also the broader governance landscape in Uttar Pradesh. The unfolding narrative serves as a reminder of the intricacies involved in balancing power, accountability, and the need for effective governance in a democratic society.
