Arvind Kejriwal raised questions about the disdain some groups hold for Delhi residents and challenged those groups to earn the trust of the populace through their actions and policies, urging voters to consider their intentions in upcoming elections.
In a significant development, the national capital, New Delhi, will once again be absent from the traditional tableau display during this year's Republic Day parade at Rajpath. This marks the fourth consecutive occasion where Delhi's representation has been omitted, reigniting a heated exchange between Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Kejriwal, who has presided over the Delhi government for nearly ten years, has taken a strong stance against the BJP, especially in light of the forthcoming assembly elections.
"For several years now, the tableau of Delhi has been systematically excluded from the parade. What sort of political maneuvering is this? Why does the BJP harbor such disdain for the people of Delhi? What motivation do the citizens of Delhi have to vote for them?" questioned Mr. Kejriwal, emphasizing his grievances.
He further asserted, "The BJP lacks a vision for the populace of Delhi. Their sole focus seems to be disparaging Kejriwal. Should we extend our support to them based solely on that? Why are the people of Delhi and their tableau being barred from participating in the celebrations on January 26?" His remarks reflect a growing dissatisfaction and a call for accountability from the ruling party.
Mr. Kejriwal stated that as the capital of India, Delhi deserves a consistent presence in the Republic Day celebrations held each January 26th, advocating for inclusivity and representation for the city.
In response, the BJP criticized Kejriwal's comments, suggesting they reveal an "anarchist nature" and inquired about the content that the former Chief Minister would wish to present in the tableau. Delhi BJP chief Virendraa Sachdeva posed a provocative question: "What message does he intend to convey in the tableau of Delhi? Is it the tragic incidents where over 60 individuals lost their lives or the 'Sheeshmahal' he has constructed through the exploitation of public funds?"
Sachdeva emphasized that the Republic Day parade showcases the essence of the entire nation, determined by a committee tasked with selecting the participating tableaux. He accused Kejriwal of politicizing the issue. "We should not forget the protests staged by Arvind Kejriwal during the Republic Day of 2014," he concluded, recalling past tensions.
Last year, Delhi also failed to have its tableau featured during the parade, and AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj lamented that this marks the third consecutive year of such exclusion. Bhardwaj characterized the ongoing situation as the BJP's "revenge" following their defeat to AAP in the Punjab assembly elections.
He pointed out the apparent coincidence of Punjab's tableau proposal being rejected as well, suggesting a broader pattern of political retaliation. Observers note that the last appearance of Delhi's tableau in the Republic Day parade was in 2021, when it highlighted the Shahjahanabad redevelopment project.
