Vijay Speaks Out: Actor Calls for Urgent Action After Shocking Sexual Assault at Chennai's Anna University

A second-year engineering student was enjoying time with a male friend on campus when they were suddenly confronted by two assailants. The men violently attacked her friend and then proceeded to assault her in a nearby secluded area.

Vijay, the prominent actor and leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, has expressed his outrage regarding the sexual assault incident involving a second-year engineering student on the grounds of Anna University in Chennai. He has called upon the Tamil Nadu government to take immediate legal measures against the accused, emphasizing the urgent need for justice.

In a statement made on social media, Vijay referred to the event as "deeply shocking and painful," reflecting the sentiments of many who are disturbed by the brutality of the crime. It was reported that the attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, when the victim and her male companion were on the campus. The attackers not only assaulted the male friend but also dragged the woman into a secluded area and assaulted her.

The two students, both enrolled at the university, found themselves victims of a violent crime in what should have been a safe environment. Following the attack, police have indicated that they arrested one of the suspects, a 37-year-old individual who operated a biryani stall nearby. In light of this, Vijay urged the MK Stalin-led government to ensure that swift actions are taken against the perpetrator, advocating for a punishment that reflects the severity of the crime committed.

Vijay further stressed the importance of expanding safety measures across the state, particularly for women. He advocated for the installation of CCTV cameras, smart poles, emergency buttons, and communication devices in public areas to enhance security. Citing the Nirbhaya fund, which is intended for women's safety initiatives, he suggested that these resources could be allocated to implement necessary safety measures effectively.

In his post, he highlighted the need for comprehensive safety protocols in various public spaces, including city buses and educational institutions. He emphasized that it is not enough merely to install safety infrastructure; ongoing monitoring is essential to ensure their functionality and effectiveness. Vijay insisted that maintaining these systems should be prioritized and that adequate resources should be directed towards protecting women's rights and safety.

In addition to infrastructural improvements, Vijay called for the establishment of legal assistance and psychological support aimed at empowering women.
