Delhi police have filed an FIR against Rahul Gandhi for alleged "physical assault and incitement" during a confrontation that occurred within the Parliament grounds. The incident has sparked significant political discourse and media attention.
The case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, concerning allegations of physical confrontation with BJP Members of Parliament, was transferred to the Crime Branch by the Delhi Police on Friday. This decision comes in the wake of an incident that unfolded on the Parliament premises, where tension escalated between NDA and INDIA bloc MPs who were vying for access to the house during protests centered around perceived insults to BR Ambedkar.
According to reports, the Delhi Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Gandhi, asserting that he was involved in "physical assault and incitement" amid the commotion. An official informed PTI that the Crime Branch will now handle the investigation of this allegation.
Two BJP MPs, Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput, sustained injuries during the incident and were subsequently hospitalized. Members of the BJP claimed that Rahul Gandhi physically pushed these MPs in an attempt to force his way into the House.
In response, Rahul Gandhi contended that it was the BJP MPs who engaged in threatening and aggressive behavior toward him, effectively blocking his entrance to Parliament. He further claimed that these allegations aimed to divert attention from discussions related to the Adani Group's recent indictment in the United States, saying, "The BJP is looking to create distractions by making these accusations."
The FIR lodged against Gandhi encompasses several serious charges, including voluntarily causing grievous hurt, voluntarily causing hurt, acts endangering others' safety, use of criminal force, criminal intimidation, and common intention, as outlined in the BNS. This report was filed at the Parliament Street Police station.
In a twist, the Congress party also submitted a complaint to the police, alleging misconduct from BJP legislators towards Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge during the same sequence of events.
A senior officer from the Delhi Police, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed to Reuters that the investigation into the FIR filed against Rahul Gandhi was underway. The law enforcement officials expressed their intent to review any available footage related to the incident, indicating that they had also taken into account the complaint put forth by Congress. They assured that appropriate actions would follow based on their findings.
Medical professionals reported that the injured BJP lawmakers were recovering well and were in "better condition" following treatment at a local hospital. The fallout from the exchange continues to generate significant political discourse.
Amid the unfolding controversy, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rahul Gandhi's sister and a prominent Congress leader, remarked that the police's investigation highlighted the BJP's increasing "desperation." She criticized the party for its continuous attempts to undermine Rahul Gandhi through multiple FIRs and what she described as falsehoods, asserting that this behavior reflects their diminished standing.
