India's health ministry assures no alarm over Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) reports from China, noting stable respiratory data. Citizens are encouraged to maintain precautions as China minimizes flu outbreak risks, affirming travel safety.
The health ministry of India announced on Friday that it is closely observing the situation related to the recent reports concerning an outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, while emphasizing that there is no need for concern at this time. Atul Goel, the director general of health services (DGHS), stated that despite circulating information about the HMPV outbreak, an analysis of respiratory illness data in India does not indicate a significant increase in cases for December 2024, nor have there been any reported surges from various medical institutions across the country. He reiterated that the current scenario does not warrant alarm.
Goel also noted that respiratory infections typically see an uptick during the winter months, a trend for which hospitals in India are well-prepared. They maintain adequate supplies and bed availability to manage potential spikes in cases. He encouraged the public to adhere to standard preventive measures to curb the transmission of respiratory infections. Specifically, he advised individuals experiencing symptoms such as coughs or colds to limit close interactions with others to mitigate the risk of spreading infections.
In parallel, authorities in China have attempted to downplay the reports suggesting a severe flu outbreak overwhelming their healthcare system. They indicated that the current respiratory illness cases this winter are not as intense as those experienced in the previous year. Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, mentioned that respiratory infections typically reach their peak during the winter months in the northern hemisphere. She highlighted that the current phase of disease spread appears to be milder and less widespread compared to the previous winter season.
Furthermore, the Chinese government reassured that it is safe for foreign nationals to visit China. The spokesperson emphasized that the health and well-being of both Chinese citizens and international visitors are a priority for the government. She expressed confidence in the safety of travel within the country, reiterating the commitment to public health and safety during this period.
Overall, both India and China are taking necessary steps to monitor and manage respiratory infections, with health officials in India emphasizing preparedness and preventive measures, while Chinese authorities seek to reassure the public and travelers regarding the situation in their country. As respiratory illnesses are common during the colder months, vigilance remains essential in promoting health and safety for all individuals.
