Ghosh remains in custody due to a judicial remand linked to a separate case regarding claimed financial misconduct at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.
New Delhi: On Friday, December 13, the Sealdah court provided bail to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, along with ex-officer-in-charge of Tala police station, Abhijit Mondal. This decision came in light of their involvement in a distressing case concerning the rape and murder of a doctor who was on duty. The parents of the deceased doctor voiced their profound disappointment upon hearing the news of the bail granting.
The court’s decision was largely influenced by the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) inability to submit a chargesheet within the mandated 90-day timeframe. Mondal was accused of improperly delaying the filing of the FIR related to the tragic incident that took place on August 9, involving a trainee doctor at the hospital, while Ghosh faced serious allegations of tampering with crucial evidence linked to the case. This incident has incited significant public outrage and unrest.
It is important to note that even though Ghosh has been granted bail in connection with the rape-murder case, he will continue to remain in custody. This is due to his ongoing judicial remand concerning a separate issue involving alleged financial misconduct at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. On the other hand, Mondal's attorney indicated that his client is poised to be released from the correctional facility where he has been held under judicial remand.
The mother of the deceased doctor expressed her dismay to the news agency PTI, stating, “We had hoped the CBI would expedite the investigation and ensure that those accountable would face justice. However, with the accused being granted bail, it appears as if the system is letting us down.” She poignantly added, “Every day we are haunted by the thought that this might turn into yet another instance where the influential evade punishment.”
In a similar vein, the father of the victim shared his heartbreak with PTI, lamenting, “Our trust in the CBI to achieve justice for our daughter has been shattered, and we now find ourselves questioning whether justice will ever be served.”
After resigning in August from his role at R.G. Kar Medical College, Ghosh was swiftly appointed as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. However, following massive protests and criticism from the high court regarding his appointment, he was soon instructed to take an indefinite leave of absence.
Meanwhile, the CBI continues to probe the case, which is reportedly linked to the actions of civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, who has also been implicated in this shocking crime. The ongoing investigation serves to highlight the complexities of the judicial process and the public's demand for accountability in such grave matters.
