Authorities warn of imminent storms as Queensland and NSW brace for heavy rain, hail, and strong winds with severe weather conditions expected throughout the day.
Residents in Queensland and New South Wales are bracing for severe weather conditions that could lead to dangerous thunderstorms later today. The Bureau of Meteorology has released urgent warnings for south-east Queensland and north-eastern NSW, anticipating damaging winds, large hail, and localized flooding.
Starting from midday and continuing into the evening, these extreme conditions are set to impact a wide area. Senior meteorologist Jonathan Howe indicated that thunderstorms are expected to develop across much of eastern Australia, affecting regions from northern Queensland to central Queensland, extending southward into eastern Victoria.
In Queensland, the areas most likely to experience severe thunderstorms include regions south of Maroochydore, down through Toowoomba, and covering the Granite Belt. Major urban centers like Brisbane and the Gold Coast, along with some suburbs of the Sunshine Coast, fall under this warning.
In New South Wales, the northeastern regions face a similar fate, particularly places north of Mudgee, reaching up to Coonabarabran and Moree. Far north-east locations, including Lismore, may experience isolated yet highly intense storms.
These thunderstorms are predicted to bring a mix of intense rainfall, large hail measuring up to 2 centimeters in diameter, and winds surpassing 90 km/h. However, there is the potential for isolated locations to encounter hail as large as 5 centimeters and wind gusts exceeding 125 km/h, according to meteorological warnings.
The current unsettled weather pattern is attributed to a considerable moist air mass over central Australia in conjunction with a surface trough moving through the region. Residents are advised to stay informed regarding weather updates and heed all safety precautions.
With severe thunderstorms expected to persist in south-east and central Queensland until Friday, it is essential for residents to remain vigilant and prepared for sudden changes in weather. Following safety guidelines during extreme weather can significantly reduce risks and ensure community safety.
