The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that a low-pressure system forming in the Bay of Bengal will lead to substantial rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on December 11 and 12. Residents should prepare for potential weather impacts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating that southern regions of India, especially Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, are poised to experience significant rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in the forthcoming days. A low-pressure system is anticipated to emerge in the Bay of Bengal on Saturday, December 7, and it is projected to travel west-northwestward, ultimately reaching the southwestern Bay of Bengal close to Sri Lanka by December 12.
As a result of this weather pattern, consistent rain is expected across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on December 11 and 12, while Coastal Andhra Pradesh, along with Yanam and Rayalaseema, should also prepare for precipitation on December 12.
The latest updates from IMD reveal that a cyclonic circulation is ongoing over the Equatorial Indian Ocean and the adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, extending up to an elevation of 3.1 kilometers above sea level. Consequently, a low-pressure system is likely to develop over the central south Bay of Bengal around December 7.
The Regional Meteorological Centre based in Chennai anticipates light to moderate rainfall in various parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on Saturday. However, heavier rainfall is forecasted on the following specific dates: on December 11, areas including Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, and Ramanathapuram districts in Tamil Nadu, along with Karaikal, are expected to experience substantial rain. On December 12, the forecast remains similar, with heavy rainfall predicted for Chengalpattu, Viluppuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, and Ramanathapuram districts, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal.
In addition, a new Western Disturbance is set to impact the Western Himalayan region, as well as its neighboring plains in Northwest India starting from December 8.
In the realm of weather predictions for the upcoming week, the meteorological department expects isolated heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on December 11 and 12, with similar conditions anticipated in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema on December 12. Furthermore, light to moderate rainfall or snowfall is likely to occur across the Western Himalayan region, with isolated light rain projected over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and western Uttar Pradesh on December 8 and 9.
Dense fog is also forecasted for late-night and early morning hours in regions such as Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura until December 9. Additionally, similar fog conditions are expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh from December 7 to 10, as well as Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bihar from December 8 to 10, and finally in Himachal Pradesh on December 10 and 11.
