Hospital officials report that the MLA remains in critical condition and is currently on ventilator support as part of his ongoing treatment.
Congress MLA Uma Thomas, representing Thrikkakara in Kerala, is currently receiving critical medical care following a serious incident that occurred on Sunday evening at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi. Reports indicate that she fell from the stadium’s gallery, leading to significant injuries to her head and spine.
Emergency responders promptly arrived at the scene to assist, and injured MLA Uma Thomas was quickly transported to a nearby private hospital by a group of volunteers and passersby. As per a medical update issued by the hospital, which was referenced in a PTI news report, she sustained severe injuries including damage to her head and spinal cord. The injuries also include facial and rib fractures, which have resulted in internal bleeding within her lungs.
Hospital officials have stated that Uma Thomas is currently on ventilator support and remains in a critical condition. “She has suffered a head injury and multiple fractures. It is essential for her to be observed closely in the next 24 hours. We are providing all necessary medical assistance,” remarked Kerala’s Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan in an interview with ANI on Sunday night. Initially, there were grave concerns regarding her situation, according to Satheesan.
Visuals of the distressing situation surfaced on social media, depicting bystanders lifting the unconscious MLA and hastily taking her to the hospital for urgent medical attention. The incident occurred during her attendance at the Mridanga Naadam Bharatanatyam program, which was set to be inaugurated by Kerala's Minister of Culture, Saji Cherian. This event featured around 12,000 dancers, including renowned actor-dancer Divya Unni, who were striving to achieve a Guinness World Record.
As stated by sources within the Congress party, the seating arrangement at the venue was limited, with a strip of ribbon marking the edge of the gallery. This barrier appears to have been insufficient, as Uma Thomas reportedly fell approximately 15 feet, making contact with the concrete ground.
In response to the incident, State Health Minister Veena George and Industries Minister P Rajeeve visited the hospital to assess the situation. They confirmed that an expert medical team from the Health Department would be collaborating with the hospital's medical staff to ensure the best possible care for Uma Thomas. The team, which includes specialists from both Kottayam Medical College and Ernakulam Government Medical College, is led by Dr. Jayakumar, the Superintendent of Kottayam Medical College. During their visit, the health minister discussed the case with Minister Rajeeve, who oversees the district, and interacted with the medical professionals responsible for her treatment.
The incident has raised significant concern within the community and among political circles, with many calling for justice and accountability regarding the safety measures at public events. As the situation develops, updates on Uma Thomas’s condition are expected to be released, reflecting the ongoing care and attention being provided by the medical teams involved in her recovery.
