After enduring five years of delays, commuters can finally enjoy a seamless travel experience between Sydney and Newcastle. The inaugural Mariyung train launched from the Newcastle Interchange at precisely 8:21 AM on December 3, heralding the beginning of a transformative inter-city service intended to revolutionize travel along the stunning NSW coastline.

The new Mariyung trains, named after the Darug word for Emu, offer an upgraded travel environment that prioritizes passenger comfort and convenience. With spacious two-by-two seating arrangements equipped with armrests, tray tables, and high backrests, passengers can expect a more enjoyable journey. Each train is also outfitted with charging ports for mobile devices, making it easier for commuters to stay connected on the go. Additionally, these modern trains provide dedicated areas for luggage, prams, and bicycles, ensuring that travelers can easily manage their belongings during the ride.

Passengers will also benefit from enhanced climate control features, including advanced heating and air conditioning systems, which contribute to a pleasant travel atmosphere regardless of the weather outside. To date, 15 Mariyung train sets have undergone comprehensive modifications, incorporating upgraded safety features such as relocated CCTV viewing screens and passenger door controls. Two of these state-of-the-art Mariyung sets have already entered service, while the remaining units await safety testing before their gradual implementation along the Central Coast and Newcastle Line. Following this, there are plans to extend the Mariyung service onto the Blue Mountains Line and the South Coast Line, bringing this innovative travel option to a broader audience.
