On Wednesday, a significant technical issue impacted communication for countless users across various social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. Many individuals found themselves unable to engage in their usual social media activities, leading to widespread frustration. Meta, the parent company of these platforms, acknowledged the situation and stated it was diligently working to rectify the problem. As the evening progressed, users gradually reported that their access to the applications was being restored.
According to data from DownDetector, a website that monitors service outages, more than 50,000 users of Facebook experienced difficulties around 11 PM (IST). The reported issues included complications with logging in, difficulties in uploading new posts, and challenges in updating existing content. Simultaneously, Instagram faced similar struggles, with over 23,000 users unable to access their accounts or post updates.
Users attempting to engage with messages, posts, and updates found themselves facing slow connections or complete inaccessibility. This disruption affected both desktop and mobile versions of the platforms. Interestingly, despite the issues, many users reported that they could access WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook through either their computers or mobile devices, albeit not without difficulty.
In a statement released around midnight on Thursday, Meta acknowledged the ongoing technical difficulties. The company expressed its awareness of the situation and conveyed its commitment to restoring normal functionality as swiftly as possible, offering apologies for the inconvenience experienced by users.
By approximately 3:50 AM, Meta provided a brief update indicating progress towards resolving the issues. In their message, they expressed gratitude to users for their patience and assured them that they were nearly done with the final checks. They reiterated their apologies to anyone affected by the service outage.
Reports regarding the technical problems began surfacing just after 10:58 PM, as Facebook users struggled to log in and upload new content. Users reported a failure to update their existing posts, leading to a frustrating experience where interaction with the platform became virtually impossible.
Similarly, Instagram users encountered significant obstacles; many reported difficulties accessing their posts or making updates. The app was also prone to frequent crashes, exacerbating the challenges faced by users trying to engage with the platform during this period of disruption.
WhatsApp users were not spared from these issues either, with numerous individuals facing problems when trying to send or receive messages. The extent of the disruptions was closely monitored by DownDetector, which reported a notable spike in user complaints as the outage unfolded.
