During the Parliament's Winter Session, the Lok Sabha convened on a non-working day for the final round of the Constitution debate, marking the second day of discussions focused on crucial constitutional matters.
The Winter Session of Parliament is currently underway, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the opportunity to address the Lok Sabha regarding the Constitution, which is commemorating its 75th anniversary since it was adopted on November 26. This session features a dedicated two-day debate, with the Lok Sabha initiating discussions on Friday, while the Rajya Sabha will follow suit next week on Monday and Tuesday. This significant debate highlights the importance of constitutional values in India's democratic framework.
During this session, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made headlines with her inaugural speech as the newly-elected Congress Member of Parliament from Kerala's Wayanad. In her address, she critiqued the government and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on various fronts. Vadra, who is the sister of Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, and the daughter of Sonia Gandhi, achieved a remarkable victory in Wayanad, taking the seat previously held by her brother, who opted to retain his constituency in Rae Bareli. Her victory in this election marks her first foray into politics, showcasing her family's continued influence in Indian political affairs.
As the session continued, prominent figures from the ruling government, such as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, took the floor to voice their support for the government's initiatives. The Winter Session commenced at the beginning of December and is expected to conclude on December 20, providing ample time for discussions on various pressing issues facing the nation.
On December 14, 2024, Prime Minister Modi proposed a series of eleven resolutions during his speech in the Lok Sabha, aimed at reinforcing the foundational values of the Constitution. These resolutions emphasize the importance of duty both for the government and citizens, advocate for inclusive growth in alignment with the principle of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,” and call for a zero-tolerance stance against corruption. They also highlight the necessity for citizens to honor the nation's culture and laws, to abandon colonial mindsets, and to move away from dynastic politics.
Additionally, the Prime Minister stressed that the Constitution should not be misused for personal gains and that reservations should be preserved for those who need them, steering clear of reservations based on religion. He expressed a vision that positions India as a leader in promoting women’s advancement and reiterated the importance of balancing national development with state-level progress, encapsulated by the motto “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.”
In his speech, Prime Minister Modi firmly asserted that the vision encapsulated in “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” transcends mere rhetoric. He cited examples of success, such as lifting 250 million people out of poverty and enhancing infrastructure in India's northeastern regions, as manifestations of inclusive growth and progress under his administration.
Reaction from the opposition, particularly from the Congress party, indicated a perception that Prime Minister Modi's address lacked originality and was largely focused on blaming Congress rather than providing substantive solutions. Congress MP KC Venugopal voiced concerns over the government's alleged prioritization of certain corporate interests, specifically mentioning the Adani group, and criticized the absence of key ministers during opposition discussions.
Further, the Prime Minister defended several landmark government initiatives, asserting that programs such as the Swachh Bharat Mission and Ujjwala Yojana are integral to combating poverty and improving women’s lives. He claimed that such initiatives resonate with the Constitution’s core values, dismissing the Congress’s long-standing slogan of “Garibi Hatao” as ineffective. In his remarks, he also spoke in favor of the Citizenship Amendment Act, framing it as aligned with Mahatma Gandhi's vision for India’s inclusive ethos.
Moreover, the Prime Minister reiterated his support for the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, framing it as an act of homage to the legacy of B.R. Ambedkar. He also emphasized the intended implementation of a Uniform Civil Code, asserting that it was a desire shared by the architects of the Constitution and echoing the sentiments of Ambedkar regarding equality across all religions.
As the Parliament continues its session, all eyes remain on the deliberations and resolutions that will shape India's legislative and social landscape in the months to come. The discussions surrounding the Constitution not only underscore the significance of its principles but also reflect the vibrant and dynamic nature of Indian democracy.
