On Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, launched a scathing criticism against the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), asserting that they have effectively taken control of every institution in India. His remarks were primarily aimed at Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the RSS, following Bhagwat's controversial statements regarding India's Independence. Bhagwat indicated that the consecration date of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya should be regarded as the real Independence Day for India, claiming that genuine freedom was established on that date after centuries of foreign invasion.
During the inauguration ceremony of the Congress's newly established headquarters in Delhi, Gandhi remarked on the significance of the occasion, stating, "This is not just an ordinary building; it has risen from the very soil of our nation, a testament to the dedication and sacrifices made by millions over time." He noted the gravity of Bhagwat's claims, emphasizing that anyone making such statements in another country would likely face charges of treason. Gandhi asserted that Bhagwat's view effectively undermines the essence of the freedom movement, which culminated in the creation of the Constitution, a document he claimed Bhagwat has discredited.
In response to Gandhi's accusations, BJP national president JP Nadda took to social media platform X to call out the Congress leader. He labeled Gandhi's claims as an admission of hostility towards the Indian state, suggesting that Gandhi and his associates have ties to groups aiming to undermine national integrity. Nadda further stated, "The Congress party has consistently empowered factions that seek to weaken India, and the electorate is wise to these tactics." He urged the public to reject Gandhi's ideology and the Congress’s purported divisive agenda.
Earlier in the day, Gandhi elaborated on his perspective, stating that India's essence is in its unity amidst diversity. He pointed out the representation of multiple national languages within the new Congress headquarters, reinforcing the notion that no culture or community is superior to another. This diversity, he argued, is enshrined in the Constitution and symbolically represented by the building itself.
He contrasted this inclusive vision with what he described as a centralized viewpoint promoted by leaders like Bhagwat, who frequently comments on India's history and independence. Gandhi vehemently opposed Bhagwat's assertions, dubbing them treasonous because they dismiss the legitimacy of the Constitution and the struggle against colonial rule. He stated, "Claiming that India's independence was not achieved in 1947 is a direct affront to every Indian citizen." He emphasized the need to challenge and dismiss such rhetoric, advocating for a more nuanced and respectful understanding of India's history.
Gandhi conveyed a sense of urgency regarding the current political climate, suggesting that those in positions of power demonstrate a lack of reverence for the national flag and constitutional values. He articulated a vision of India that opposes the trends of concentration of power. "There exists an agenda among those currently in power to stifle voices of marginalized groups, including Dalits, minorities, and tribals," he stated. His comments encapsulated the broader struggle for representation and equality within an increasingly polarized political landscape in India.
