Senator Linda Reynolds made a startling revelation about her former colleague, Labor senator Kimberley Kitching, during her defamation trial against Brittany Higgins.
On Tuesday, Senator Reynolds became emotional as she recounted a conversation with Senator Kitching, which she said contributed to Kitching’s untimely death. Reynolds asked for a break after her blood pressure spiked during this particularly poignant testimony.
Senator Reynolds is currently suing Brittany Higgins and her husband, David Sharaz, over social media posts made by the couple in 2022 and 2023. These posts were critical of Reynolds’ handling of Higgins’ allegation of rape in Parliament House in 2019.
Higgins alleged that she was raped by her then-colleague Bruce Lehrmann in 2019. Lehrmann pleaded not guilty, and his 2022 trial was aborted due to juror misconduct. The charge was later dropped, and Lehrmann continues to assert his innocence.
During her testimony, Reynolds revealed that Senator Kitching had approached her in February 2021 with an apology for information she was about to share. Kitching informed Reynolds that the Labor party was aware of the incident in her office and planned to "rain hell" on her.
Senator Reynolds is pursuing a defamation case against Higgins and Sharaz in the WA Supreme Court. The case centers around allegations of improper conduct and public criticism related to Reynolds' handling of the Higgins case.
