The United States, on Saturday, dismissed the assertions made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which alleged that US State Department-funded organizations and elements within the so-called “deep state” were working to destabilize India. These allegations included targeted attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and prominent businessman Gautam Adani. A representative from the US embassy expressed disappointment regarding these claims, highlighting the American government's ongoing commitment to upholding media freedom around the world, as reported by PTI.

The BJP, in its statement on the same day, accused the US deep state of collaborating with the media organization known as OCCRP (Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project) along with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, alleging that these entities aimed to tarnish India's reputation. The BJP pointed out Gandhi’s reliance on OCCRP reports to critique the Adani Group and to suggest connections between the group and the current government.

In response to these accusations, the US embassy spokesperson articulated concern, stating, “It is unfortunate that the ruling party in India would make such assertions.” The spokesperson further clarified that the US engages with independent organizations to support the professional growth and training of journalists, asserting that these collaborations do not dictate the content or editorial choices of the organizations involved.

The OCCRP operates out of Amsterdam and is dedicated to investigative journalism focused on issues of crime and corruption. In their allegations, the BJP referred to a report from French media that claimed OCCRP receives funding from the US State Department’s USAID, as well as other influential figures associated with the “deep state,” including George Soros and the Rockefeller Foundation.

An official from the US embassy reiterated the United States’ long-standing role as a defender of media freedom internationally, stating, “An independent press is a fundamental pillar of democracy, fostering informed dialogue and holding those in power to account.” This remark underscores the necessity of a free media landscape, which is vital for a thriving democracy.

Moreover, recent developments have seen Gautam Adani, aged 62, along with his nephew Sagar and others facing charges from US prosecutors for allegedly paying over USD 250 million in bribes from 2020 to 2024. These bribes were purportedly aimed at securing solar energy contracts that could yield profits exceeding USD 2 billion. Following these serious allegations, the Indian National Congress called for an exhaustive investigation, accusing the ruling government of providing protection to the Adani Group. In contrast, the Adani Group has characterized these allegations as unfounded and lacking merit.
