The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation recently announced an interruption in service but did not provide any specific details regarding the cause of the disruption, leaving commuters seeking clarity on the situation.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced that train operations between the Jahangirpuri and Samaypur Badli stations will experience disruptions for more than ten days, commencing on December 18, Wednesday. This service interruption is primarily due to ongoing challenges related to cable thefts that have been witnessed despite consistent monitoring and security measures at various metro stations and along the tracks.
According to the DMRC’s notification posted on X, train services between the mentioned stations will not be operational after 10:45 PM until the conclusion of revenue service. Additionally, there will be no services from the start of revenue operations until 7:02 AM from the night of December 18 through until the early hours of December 29. It was also noted that the Samaypur Badli, Rohini Sector-18, 19, and Haiderpur Badli Mor stations will remain closed during this timeframe. However, the regular metro services connecting Jahangirpuri to Millennium City Centre in Gurugram will continue uninterrupted.
Moreover, the DMRC has highlighted that there will be an additional service alteration on the Red Line (Line-1). Specifically, train services from Keshav Puram heading towards Rithala will be suspended after 11:30 PM on the night of December 31 into January 1, 2025.
As for the worrying trend of cable thefts affecting the Delhi Metro system, authorities have reported a significant increase in such incidents. A total of 44 cases of cable theft were recorded in the current year, compared to 38 cases from the previous year. This rise in thefts persists despite ongoing efforts for stringent checks and surveillance at metro stations and along the tracks.
According to data obtained from the Delhi police, only 9 out of the 38 cases of cable theft reported in 2023 led to successful resolutions, resulting in 12 arrests. However, in 2024, the police managed to solve 22 out of the reported 44 cases and apprehended 53 suspects. This indicates an ongoing struggle with theft in the metro system.
A senior police official indicated that enhancing security measures, such as improving lighting in poorly lit areas and expanding the deployment of CCTV cameras along the tracks, could significantly reduce the incidence of these thefts. Routine inspections are undertaken by both police and metro officials in an attempt to prevent these crimes.
Earlier this month, a notable incident occurred when law enforcement successfully dismantled a gang of 11 individuals implicated in stealing 140 meters of signaling cable from the Blue Line. The investigation revealed that the gang had devised a method to ascend the elevated tracks using tree branches, enabling them to commit their theft. This criminal activity resulted in service disruptions for approximately six hours between the Moti Nagar and Kirti Nagar stations. Currently, four members of this gang are in custody while efforts continue to locate the remaining suspects.
