The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), now equipped with two Lok Sabha representatives, a ministerial position within the central government, and a notable presence across several districts in western Uttar Pradesh, is on a mission to enhance the legacy of its founder, Chaudhary Charan Singh, while simultaneously broadening its political influence across significant regions in the nation. The party has commenced a year-long campaign dedicated to promoting the contributions of Mr. Singh, who not only served as the Prime Minister of India but was also the first chief minister of Uttar Pradesh not affiliated with the Congress Party. He is celebrated for his advocacy for farmers and played a crucial role in establishing policies that greatly improved the conditions and livelihoods of agricultural workers.
In a bid to honor the 122nd birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the RLD plans a week-long celebration from December 17 to 23. This initiative reflects the party's ambitions to extend its reach beyond its traditional base among the Jat community in western Uttar Pradesh. The inaugural celebration took place in Alwar, coinciding with Mr. Singh's birth anniversary. The event featured the unveiling of a statue commemorating the late leader, with speeches delivered by Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary and Bhupender Yadav, a prominent BJP leader.
The RLD is also focusing on establishing a stronger presence in Delhi, planning events that revolve around its leaders and significant figures who are regarded as progressive and influential. Recently, the party organized the Chaudhary Charan Singh Awards in New Delhi to commemorate the enduring influence of this esteemed leader, who was awarded the Bharat Ratna and served as the fifth Prime Minister of India.
These awards, which are presented by the Kisan Trust, aim to recognize exceptional contributions to agriculture, rural development, and social welfare—areas that were of paramount importance to Chaudhary Charan Singh. The ceremony was attended by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who emphasized the relevance of Singh's ideals in contemporary times, stating that his legacy continues to motivate individuals dedicated to improving the lives of farmers and rural communities. The award recipients included notable figures such as Neerja Chowdhury, recognized for her insightful journalism, and Rajendra Singh, honored for his impactful work in water conservation.
Additionally, the event celebrated Firoz Hossain for his significant contributions to agricultural research and Pritam Singh for his sustainable farming practices. Minister of State Jayant Chaudhary underscored the importance of preserving Chaudhary Charan Singh's vision, characterizing the awards as a tribute to his legacy and a recognition of those paving the way for progress in agriculture, rural development, and journalism.
As part of its efforts to engage younger generations with Singh's philosophies, the RLD announced an AI Hackathon designed to promote his writings and ideals. This initiative is among various strategies aimed at ensuring the party and its supporters maintain visibility within the political landscape of the capital.
Furthermore, with an operational base in Lutyens' Delhi, the RLD made headlines during the Ranga Pravesha ceremony for Jayant Chaudhary's daughter, a renowned Kuchipudi dancer, which was attended by high-profile dignitaries including the Vice President and the Commerce Minister.
Bhupender Chaudhary, a close associate of Jayant Chaudhary, explained that the award recipients were selected by a distinguished panel of judges. He reiterated that Chaudhary Charan Singh was pivotal in enacting the UP Zamindari Abolition Act along with other vital legislation that championed farmers' rights. He reaffirmed the RLD's commitment to championing farmers' interests, emphasizing that these awards echo the principles that Singh stood for.
Despite facing challenges in making a significant impact from 2014 to 2022, including a loss of traditional seats, the RLD successfully secured nine out of thirty-three seats during the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections while collaborating with the Samajwadi Party. Following their split with the Samajwadi Party and the opposition INDIA bloc, the RLD aligned with the BJP-led NDA and demonstrated noteworthy performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections, winning both contested seats.
Insiders reveal that the RLD is now focusing on expanding its influence not only within Uttar Pradesh, particularly targeting seven districts in eastern and central regions, but is also looking to strengthen its presence in Jat-dominated areas of Rajasthan. The party is moving forward with a strategy that aligns with the AJGR (Ahir, Jat, Gurjar, and Rajput) framework conceived by Chaudhary Charan Singh, now integrating a broader social justice approach that includes Dalits.
In this context, a party functionary mentioned the introduction of a D-MAJGR (Dalit, Muslim, Ahir, Jaat, Gurjar, and Rajput) strategy, emphasizing that this initiative does not conflict with the BJP but rather adds value to the existing collaborative effort.
