MATES is a temporary program designed for Indian graduates and early-career professionals. It facilitates mobility for those with in-demand qualifications in specific sectors, helping them gain international experience and opportunities.
The MATES program offers an exciting opportunity for young professionals to reside and work in Australia for a duration of up to two years, enabling them to enhance their skills and gain invaluable experience in their respective fields. Industries that fall within the scope of this initiative include renewable energy, mining, engineering, information and communications technology, artificial intelligence, financial technology, and agricultural technology.
Each year, a maximum of 3,000 temporary positions will be made available via a visa pre-application ballot system. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to apply for a Temporary Work (International Relations) (Subclass 403) visa within the MATES framework. Furthermore, participants will have the option to bring dependents, who will not be counted against the overall cap of available positions.
The registration for the MATES ballot is scheduled to open in December 2024. To prepare for your application, there are several steps to follow:
Firstly, you will need to create an ImmiAccount. Secondly, it is essential to verify that you meet all the MATES eligibility requirements. Thirdly, ensure you possess a valid Indian passport. Finally, keep track of the opening period for ballot registrations.
The eligibility criteria for applicants includes selection through the relevant ballot process, being between the ages of 18 and 30 at the start of the ballot registration, and having not participated in MATES previously. Additionally, applicants must have graduated within two years prior to the ballot registration period from an accredited educational institution, specifically one listed on the Indian Ministry of Education’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Top 100 Overall list.
Applicants must hold a qualification equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree or higher that aligns with one of the specified sectors: renewable energy, mining, engineering, information and communications technology, artificial intelligence, financial technology, or agricultural technology. Proficiency in the English language is also a requirement; applicants must possess an overall IELTS score of at least 6, with no less than 5 in each of the four components. Furthermore, candidates should demonstrate financial stability to support themselves during their stay, have reliable health insurance arrangements, and meet any additional visa prerequisites, including health and character assessments.
Finding employment while in Australia is an important aspect of the MATES program. Although visa holders are not strictly mandated to work in their field of study, the program is structured to assist young professionals in broadening their skill set and expanding their professional networks. For visa compliance purposes, demonstrating financial means to sustain oneself in Australia can be achieved by securing a job offer from an Australian employer.
