A young man has been extradited from Queensland to face serious allegations linked to an attempted gang-related home invasion in the south-western region of Sydney. Paea Tuiniua, aged 20, was apprehended at Brisbane Airport by the Australian Federal Police on Friday, just days after his alleged accomplice, Faez Finau, was taken into custody.
The incident began in the early hours of December 31, when Sydney police received calls about an attempted armed break-in at a residence on Calaria Close, Edensor Park. Upon their arrival, officers learned that two individuals had already left the scene in a Hyundai sedan.
Not long after, the police spotted the vehicle in Hinchinbrook, prompting the commencement of a chase. However, the pursuit was ultimately called off due to safety concerns. During this escapade, it is claimed that a passenger in the car fired shots towards the police, hitting a police vehicle's bonnet, although fortunately, no officers sustained injuries.
The chase concluded when the vehicle was brought to a halt in Varroville with the deployment of road spikes. Reports indicate that Faez Finau was the driver during the incident, and he was arrested while his passenger made a run for it.
Paea Tuiniua now faces multiple criminal charges, including special aggravated break and enter with the intent to commit a serious offense, discharging a firearm with the aim of resisting arrest, and two counts each of firing a weapon in a manner that could likely cause injury and possessing an unauthorised pistol.
In a brief court session on Monday at the Brisbane Magistrates Court, detectives from Campbelltown obtained approval for his extradition. The court documents reveal that Tuiniua allegedly attempted to force his way into the single-storey residence in Edensor Park, aiming to inflict grievous bodily harm while armed with a 9-millimetre pistol.
Investigators also stated that Tuiniua was in possession of additional unauthorised firearms, including an AR15 semi-automatic rifle and a grenade at the time of his arrest.
In a brief mention of his case at Downing Centre Local Court, Tuiniua was not physically present, nor did he appear via audio-visual link. The proceedings have been postponed until March, and he did not seek bail.
Following the use of road spikes to halt the vehicle, law enforcement discovered several weapons inside, which included two pistols alongside an assault rifle and spent cartridges. It has been noted by NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Peter Thurtell that the resident of the Edensor Park home is familiar to the authorities.
