A seven-page suicide note surfaced online, where a contractor claims he faced threats from Raju Kapanur, an associate of Kharge, over unresolved financial issues. The note raised concerns about the escalating tensions and its tragic implications.
The state government has transferred the inquiry into the contractor suicide incident to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), as announced by Home Minister G. Parameshwara on Monday. This decision comes amidst rising political tensions and allegations surrounding the case.
Minister Parameshwara addressed the media, highlighting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made accusations against the Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Priyank Kharge, in connection with the suicide. "We have referred this case to the CID for a thorough investigation," he stated. In response to demands for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, he emphasized that the suicide note does not point directly to any ministers as responsible and criticized politicizing the situation. "It is inappropriate to involve the CBI in every case," he remarked, suggesting that the investigation should remain under the jurisdiction of local authorities.
The tragic incident involves a 26-year-old contractor who reportedly took his own life on December 26 by stepping in front of an oncoming train. A suicide note, allegedly spanning seven pages and shared on social media, contains serious accusations against Raju Kapanur, an associate of Minister Kharge. The contractor reportedly accused Kapanur of extortion, demanding ₹1 crore and threatening him over unresolved financial issues, alongside naming four others who he claimed were complicit in the threats he faced.
In light of the situation, Kharge has vehemently denied any involvement in the contractor's death. He expressed his readiness to undergo a comprehensive investigation to clear his name, asserting that the BJP's calls for his resignation are unfounded and lack substantive evidence. His commitment to transparency reflects his willingness to cooperate with investigators.
In parallel with this developing story, the BJP has established two investigative committees to delve into the circumstances surrounding the recent suicides and maternal mortality rates within the state. This initiative underscores the party's intent to hold the government accountable for these pressing issues.
BJP media wing convenor Karunakar Khasale announced the formation of a 17-member committee led by Ashwath Narayan, the party's state chief spokesperson. This committee is tasked with advocating for government accountability and exploring solutions to the worrying trend of suicides in the state. Notable members of this committee include Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, the leader of the opposition in the legislative council, along with several MLAs and senior representatives from the party.
Additionally, a separate 13-member fact-finding committee has been organized, chaired by legislator Chandru Lamani, specifically focused on investigating the maternal deaths occurring in the region. Under the leadership of BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra, this committee will actively seek out information from areas affected by suicides of government officials, staff, and contractors. Their goals include gathering insights on the underlying factors prompting such drastic actions, evaluating the government’s response to these incidents, and assessing the current status of ongoing investigations.
The convergence of these inquiries not only highlights the urgent need for resolution and accountability but also reflects the broader societal concerns regarding mental health and government responsibility within the state. As the situation unfolds, all eyes remain on the CID’s investigation and the political dynamics at play as various parties seek to establish their narratives amidst this tragic event.
