Tragedy struck in Queensland as two individuals lost their lives due to separate falls at popular waterholes. An 18-year-old fell from a rope swing on the Gold Coast, while a 55-year-old suffered a fatal accident at a waterfall near Cairns.
In separate tragic events, two men lost their lives after falling into waterholes in Queensland, prompting investigations by local authorities. Police are set to compile a detailed report for the coroner concerning an 18-year-old who plummeted approximately 15 meters from a rope swing into the Coomera River, located on the Gold Coast.
Emergency services received notification around 6:30 PM on a Sunday regarding an unfortunate incident involving a young man who fell down an embankment close to Riverbreeze Crescent in Maudsland. It has been reported that the teenager was utilizing a rope swing that extended from a rock embankment when he lost his footing and fell.
Paramedics arrived promptly, but despite their efforts, the 18-year-old tragically succumbed to his injuries right at the scene. Authorities have since clarified that there are no suspicions surrounding the circumstances of the incident. Acting Superintendent Jason Tuffley expressed his condolences, acknowledging the profound sorrow felt by friends and family present at the scene, stating, “It’s incredibly sad, particularly if this took place in front of loved ones. It would be a devastating occurrence to witness.”
Witnesses like Karina De Raadt, a local resident, recounted the distressing events that unfolded that day. She noted hearing emergency vehicles and rushing out to assist a visibly upset girl while a neighbor provided first aid. “It was very traumatic,” she reflected on the scene. De Raadt mentioned that a rope near the river had been taken down earlier this year after another incident had resulted in injury. Its subsequent replacement has generated concern among local residents.
“There are many people who frequent the area,” she remarked. “There is a palpable anxiety since we are talking about young children and teenagers. It felt like an accident waiting to happen. I can’t fathom how they even manage to scale that tree.”
In a related incident occurring in far north Queensland, a 55-year-old man died after slipping and falling 30 meters from a waterfall in Behana Gorge, just south of Cairns. It is believed that this man, originating from Brisbane, was part of a group when the unfortunate event took place. Emergency services were alerted to an individual missing in the water around 1:30 PM on that same Sunday.
Rescue teams eventually located the man roughly one hour later after conducting a search operation. A spokesperson for Queensland Ambulance reported that although the man was rescued, he sustained life-threatening injuries due to being submerged in the water for an extended period. Despite receiving immediate medical assistance, he tragically passed away at the scene.
Clamshell Falls, where the incident occurred, is a well-known swimming destination within Wooroonooran National Park, situated around 75 kilometers south of Cairns. The police are preparing a report for the coroner regarding this incident. This recent event brings to mind the tragic death of another individual, a 58-year-old man, who met a similar fate in 2019 at the same location, underscoring concerns regarding safety at these popular swimming spots.
