A truck crashed into the verandah of SA MP Tony Piccolo's electorate office, damaging parked cars. A 57-year-old man from Western Australia has been charged with various traffic violations, including failing to stop at the scene.
In a troubling incident that unfolded in South Australia, a road train driver has been apprehended following a significant collision at the office of a local state member of parliament. The truck caused extensive damage, tearing down a covered walkway and crashing into two cars that were parked nearby.
The authorities were alerted shortly after 10 PM on Friday when the vehicle collided with multiple posts situated outside the office of Labor MP Tony Piccolo, located on Murray Street in Gawler, a town situated to the north of Adelaide. Initial investigations indicated that the road train did not remain at the scene of the accident, prompting a pursuit that ultimately led police to the town of Sedan, where they arrested a 57-year-old man from Western Australia.
A witness shared a video on social media, capturing the moment the truck made a left turn from Finniss Street, a narrow passage that connects the main thoroughfare to a nearby supermarket, before striking the verandah and subsequently the parked vehicles. The visual evidence illustrates the severity of the impact.
Tony Piccolo expressed his relief that no individuals were injured during the mishap. He noted that the heritage-listed structure appeared to have withstood the impact relatively well, although debris was scattered around the area, and the shopfront remained cordoned off for safety. "It was a Lindt chocolates truck that was involved in the incident," he remarked, detailing the extent of the damages. "The entire front verandah and the posts supporting one of the shopfronts were completely destroyed, and the verandah of another shopfront is dangerously hanging and will need to be taken down."
Law enforcement officials stated that the driver opted against seeking bail and is scheduled to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Monday. He faces multiple charges, including operating a vehicle without due care, driving at a hazardous speed, and failing to halt after being involved in an accident.
Emergency services rapidly responded to the scene, and the pursuit of the suspect was efficiently managed, leading to the arrest in Sedan. This incident has shed light on the growing issues related to heavy vehicle traffic in Gawler, a town that has seen substantial population growth over recent years.
Mr. Piccolo highlighted the escalating concerns regarding traffic safety, recalling a tragic occurrence from two years prior when a woman in her 70s was struck and killed by a truck mere meters from his office. He emphasized that while this latest incident marks a significant escalation in the frequency of such accidents, it is not the first time that the verandah of the building has suffered damage due to vehicular collisions. "This incident is probably the worst in terms of damage, but there have been two prior occurrences," he stated.
Additionally, the MP underscored the necessity of implementing measures to keep heavy trucks out of the central business district while acknowledging the need for some trucks to access the area to supply local stores. "Plans are already underway to address these traffic concerns," he assured.
In light of the incident, Mr. Piccolo also reached out to the local council to discuss potential improvements to Finniss Street. "It's evident that this is a narrow street, and for those unfamiliar with the area, it may be beneficial to install additional signage to guide them," he concluded, stressing the importance of ensuring public safety in the town.
