Justice Manmohan, the recently appointed Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, delivered a heartfelt farewell as he prepares to undertake his new role as a judge at the Supreme Court. His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 am on Thursday.
In a reflective address, he shared his journey, revealing that he found not only a career but a true sense of belonging during his three-decade tenure at the High Court. Justice Manmohan emphasized his commitment to nurturing public confidence in the judicial system, stating, "The effectiveness and credibility of a judicial system are measured by the faith that the public places in it. My success in this regard is ultimately for others to judge.
" Upon addressing a courtroom filled with colleagues and lawyers, he acknowledged the difficulty of departing from an institution that has been a pivotal part of his life. For Justice Manmohan, the 16 years spent serving as a High Court judge encompassed both challenges and rewarding experiences. He fondly recalled being the first in his family to pursue a career in law, considering the Delhi High Court as his home. He expressed gratitude, stating, "This court will always occupy a special place in my heart."
Following the Supreme Court Collegium's recommendation for his elevation, the Union government confirmed his appointment on December 3. While reflecting on his earlier days in law, Justice Manmohan pointed out valuable lessons learned from his experience as a junior under Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal. "He instilled in me the realization that quantity of reading matters less than comprehension and the ability to convey that understanding effectively in court," he noted. Justice Manmohan recounted his journey since being appointed to the bench on March 13, 2008. He articulated the significant weight the role carried, reinforcing his belief that law extends beyond mere rules; it represents the very framework of society that safeguards rights and upholds justice. He remarked, "Each day on the bench reaffirmed my dedication to these principles and allowed me the privilege to adjudicate numerous significant cases."
Throughout his judicial career, he observed the profound impact of law, witnessing it heal wounds and restore faith within the community. He underscored that true justice requires empathy and compassion, recognizing the human stories behind the legal matters. As he reviewed his tenure, he expressed satisfaction in his efforts to serve justice, sharing that the most memorable moments were those that brought smiles to litigants' faces. To conclude his address, he recited a poignant line from a beloved Hindi song by Gulzar, which resonated deeply with the audience, leading to enthusiastic applause. Acting Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru praised Justice Manmohan's commitment to alternative dispute resolution during his time on the bench.
Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma acknowledged Justice Manmohan's status as the longest-serving judge in the Delhi High Court's history. The event was attended by notable figures, including Delhi Bar Council Chairman Surya Prakash Khatri and other distinguished members of the legal community, who offered their heartfelt tributes. Justice Manmohan, who took office as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court in September 2024 after acting in the role for over ten months, was born on December 17, 1962. He earned his LL.B from Delhi's Campus Law Centre in 1987, quickly establishing his legal career and being designated as a Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court in January 2003. Serving as an additional judge since March 13, 2008, he was confirmed as a permanent judge by December 17, 2009.
