The central government has taken a significant step by approving the allocation of ₹944.80 crore to Tamil Nadu in response to the severe impact of Cyclone Fengal. This funding will be provided in two instalments as part of the state's share from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). The primary aim of this financial support is to bolster the relief operations undertaken by the Tamil Nadu government for the residents affected by this natural disaster.
According to an official communication from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the decision to release the funds was made post the evaluation of the situation following the cyclone that struck on November 30. Furthermore, an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) has been dispatched to conduct an on-ground assessment of the damage in various districts of Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
The Home Ministry has also emphasized its commitment to providing additional financial support through the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) based on the assessment reports prepared by the central team. The Centre has ensured that all necessary logistical support has been arranged, including the deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, along with assistance from the Indian Army and Air Force to facilitate relief efforts across the affected regions.
In terms of overall disaster relief funding, the central government has reported that more than ₹21,718.716 crore has been disbursed to 28 states during the current financial year. This encompasses various allocations, including ₹14,878.40 crore from SDRF to 26 states, ₹4,808.32 crore from NDRF to 18 states, and additional funds from both the State Disaster Mitigation Fund (SDMF) and the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF).
The government's proactive stance is indicative of its dedication to alleviating the hardships faced by communities affected by natural disasters. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the oversight of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the government has consistently pledged to stand in solidarity with states grappling with the consequences of calamities.
In a separate correspondence with the Centre, Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister, MK Stalin, underscored the extent of the destruction wrought by Cyclone Fengal. He described the situation as "unprecedented" and formally requested ₹2,000 crore in interim relief from the NDRF as a one-time allocation. The chief minister highlighted that more than 69 lakh families, representing approximately 1.5 crore individuals, have been adversely affected in northern Tamil Nadu districts such as Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Kallakurichi.
The initial evaluations conducted by the state government indicate that around ₹2,475 crore will be necessary for immediate restoration efforts. CM Stalin articulated the pressing need for financial assistance, stating, "Despite our best efforts, the scale of this disaster has overwhelmed the state’s resources, and the state urgently requires support to effectively address the repercussions of this natural disaster."
The commitment of both the state and central governments towards disaster relief operations reflects a unified effort to mitigate the adverse effects of natural calamities on the lives of citizens. With ongoing assessments and financial arrangements being made, it is hoped that affected regions will receive the urgent help they need to recover and rebuild.
