A tragic incident occurred at Muan airport in South Korea, where a passenger jet with 181 individuals on board crashed, resulting in mass casualties. Emergency services are responding to the scene amid ongoing investigations.
Tragic news has emerged following a catastrophic event involving a passenger aircraft which was transporting 181 individuals and met with disaster at Muan airport in South Korea. As per reports from CNN, at least 47 lives have been lost, with many more sustaining injuries, and these numbers are anticipated to rise as recovery efforts progress.
The unfortunate incident involved a Jeju Air flight that took off from Bangkok, Thailand, and crashed shortly after landing, around 9 AM local time on Sunday (11 AM AEDT). Among the passengers on board, 175 were travelers along with 6 crew members. The majority of those on the flight are thought to be South Korean nationals, with two passengers hailing from Thailand.
Initial investigations suggest that the mishap may have occurred due to a “bird strike,” leading to a failure in the landing gear of the aircraft as it prepared to touch down at the airport situated in the southwestern region of the country, according to reports from Yonhap.
As rescue efforts progressed, emergency services worked tirelessly to evacuate passengers from the rear of the jet. Images from the crash site depicted the tail of the aircraft engulfed in flames, with emergency responders and fire trucks nearby, racing against time to mitigate the fire.
Reports indicate that two individuals have been successfully rescued from the wreckage, with rescue teams prioritizing their efforts towards reaching those still trapped within the tail end of the plane. A representative from the fire department informed CNN that the aircraft had sustained extensive fire damage, rendering it “almost completely destroyed.” Fortunately, the initial blaze has been extinguished, permitting the commencement of official search and rescue operations at the scene.
An investigation has already begun at the site to ascertain the precise circumstances that led to this tragic event. While the world reels from this incident, many are reminded of the recent disaster involving an Azerbaijan Airlines flight on Christmas Day, which resulted in 38 fatalities.
In that instance, the aircraft was on a route from Baku, Azerbaijan to Grozny in Chechnya, Russia, but diverted and attempted an emergency landing near Aktau, Kazakhstan. Unfortunately, it crashed, disintegrated upon impact, and erupted into flames. Of the 67 individuals on board, 29 survived, many of whom suffered from severe injuries.
Following the incident, Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his apologies, acknowledging the tragic loss of life while stopping short of asserting that their air defenses were directly responsible for the plane's crash. In a conversation with Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev, he expressed his condolences regarding the heartbreaking event.
As the situation continues to unfold, families and loved ones are left in deep anguish over the loss of life and the implications of such events on air travel safety. The global community watches closely, hoping for clarity and answers in the wake of another devastating aviation accident.
