In the West Bengal Assembly, the Chief Minister called for calm among residents, urging them not to react to remarks from Bangladesh. The CM reaffirmed that West Bengal will consistently support the Central government's decisions.
The Chief Minister of West Bengal has remarked that her administration and the Trinamool Congress will adhere strictly to the directives issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, emphasizing the importance of not deviating from established protocols.
In a pointed response to certain Bangladeshi politicians who have made assertions regarding their nation’s claims over West Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her concerns about external influences potentially encroaching upon Indian territory. She challenged the notion by questioning whether citizens of India would simply accept such provocations as trivial matters.
Addressing the assembly in West Bengal, she urged the populace to maintain their composure and not to be stirred by the provocative rhetoric emerging from Bangladesh, reaffirming that West Bengal will consistently support the decisions made by the central government.
Criticizing the remarks from some leaders in Bangladesh, Mamata advised everyone to prioritize mental peace and health amidst the rising tensions. Recently, a representative from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) claimed in a public gathering in Dhaka that there are legitimate claims over the territories of Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha.
Encouraging the citizens of West Bengal to stay collected and not to react impulsively to incendiary statements from across the border, she highlighted that voices within the state, including religious leaders, have denounced both the remarks and the violence against minorities in Bangladesh. She emphasized the shared humanity present among different communities, stating that the same blood flows through the veins of all individuals, regardless of their religious identities. She called for unified efforts to prevent any escalation of tensions in West Bengal.
Furthermore, she proclaimed that West Bengal is a front-runner in expressing solidarity against the adverse conditions faced by people in Bangladesh, noting that it is the first state in India to engage in collective protests against such issues.
In her address, she also reminded her political adversaries of their responsibility in maintaining peace and urged the media to report with caution. She emphasized that West Bengal is not a state where broadcasts will be silenced, but rather a place where responsible journalism is crucial for the state’s welfare. She cautioned that any turmoil in West Bengal could have repercussions for everyone, including those with ties to Bangladesh, urging restraint in discussions regarding the unfolding situation.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed her government’s commitment to following the guidance from the Ministry of External Affairs, stressing the need for careful communication and patience as key diplomatic discussions are ongoing. She noted that the Foreign Secretary of India, Vikram Misri, is currently in Bangladesh for negotiations and that it is prudent to await the results of these discussions before adding further commentary.
It was reported that Misri conducted talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart, Mohammad Jashim Uddin, amid heightened tensions that have arisen since the political upheaval in Bangladesh in August following the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Misri’s visit to Dhaka marks the first significant diplomatic engagement from India following these events, highlighting the delicate balance that must be maintained between the two nations. This scenario reinforces the need for cooperative dialogue and mutual respect between neighboring countries.
