As the Kashmir Valley endures a severe cold wave, compounded by significant electricity shortages, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced on Sunday his decision to remain in Srinagar for the upcoming week. His intention is to closely supervise the operations of the power department and other essential services during this challenging time.
The Chief Minister, who was participating in pre-Budget and GST Council discussions in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, shared this decision through a series of tweets that highlighted the urgency of the situation. He expressed concern regarding the extreme cold conditions affecting the region, which have led to major disruptions in water and electricity supply, thus intensifying the hardships faced by residents.
In his tweets, he stated, “In light of the severe cold spell in the Kashmir valley and the resultant difficulties with water and electricity supply, I have decided to cancel my forthcoming programmes in Jammu & station myself in Srinagar for the next week to personally monitor the functioning of the power department & other important departments.”
The current winter in Kashmir is proving to be one of the most frigid in recent memory, with temperatures dropping to astonishing lows. On Saturday, Srinagar recorded a frigid -8.5 degrees Celsius, marking one of the coldest December nights in decades. This bitter cold has not only impacted daily life but has also led to the freezing of various water bodies, including the iconic Dal Lake, during the night hours.
The situation has prompted criticism from the opposition, who have expressed their concerns about ongoing power and ration issues facing the populace. Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the People’s Democratic Party, commented on the plight of citizens, stating, “The people of Jammu and Kashmir are facing a lot of problems, including power and ration problems, as their BPL ration cards have been cancelled.”
Sajad Lone, president of the People’s Conference, also voiced his concerns, emphasizing the need for more consistent power supply given the plummeting temperatures. He pointed out, “With temperatures plunging to record low levels, electricity outages are creating their own records…The people are suffering. It is biting cold. It is a request to please make arrangements for more supply…”
In light of the ongoing crises, Omar Abdullah acknowledged the inconvenience his decision to cancel Jammu engagements may cause. He assured that he regrets any disruption this may bring to event organizers but emphasized that addressing the current challenges is the most responsible course of action. “I will make it up to the people/organizations whose programmes have been affected,” he stated.
The Chief Minister has also updated his followers about his journey back to Srinagar, informing them that he is returning from Jaisalmer and will arrive in the valley by the next morning. His proactive approach aims not only to alleviate the immediate concerns of the people but also to restore a sense of normalcy amid the harsh winter conditions that have gripped the region.
