A significant manhunt has commenced following a shooting incident involving a police officer during a suspected gang-related home invasion in the south-west of Sydney. The New South Wales Police were alerted around 1:30 a.m. after reports indicated that a man attempted to gain entry into a residence armed with a firearm on Calaria Close, Edensor Park.
Upon their arrival, law enforcement found that the individual had fled in a Hyundai sedan, accompanied by another man. The police subsequently spotted the vehicle traveling along Cowpasture Road at Hinchinbrook and initiated a pursuit after the car did not comply with the stop signal.
However, due to concerns regarding the reckless driving of the vehicle, the police decided to terminate the chase. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle was detected in Varroville. In a dramatic turn of events, during a renewed pursuit, officers reported that the passenger of the sedan leaned out and fired several shots from a handgun at a police vehicle being operated by a member of the dog squad. Fortunately, despite two bullets hitting the police car, there were no injuries reported.
Authorities have indicated that the individual who discharged the firearm is believed to be the same assailant who had attempted to breach the home at Edensor Park. Officers placed spikes on the road, leading to the vehicle crashing on St Andrews Road in Varroville around 1:50 a.m.
The driver, aged 20, was apprehended and taken into custody at Campbelltown Police Station. Meanwhile, the search for the passenger, who managed to escape the scene, is actively ongoing.
Peter Thurtell, Deputy Commissioner of NSW Police’s Metropolitan Field Operations, stated in a press briefing that law enforcement discovered various firearms and weapons inside the abandoned vehicle. He noted, “One of the firearms found in the car is believed to be the same weapon used to fire at the police officers and their vehicle.”
Deputy Commissioner Thurtell characterized the event as extremely perilous, emphasizing the threats posed to officers' lives. "The officer from the dog squad is indeed fortunate to have escaped unscathed, and it’s sheer luck that neither he nor his dog was struck by the gunfire,” he remarked.
Regarding the potential motive for the attempted break-in, Deputy Commissioner Thurtell shared insights suggesting a connection to organized crime. He mentioned that both the driver of the vehicle and the resident at Edensor Park are familiar to the police. “Given the affiliations of the resident at the location, it is reasonable to suspect a gang connection,” he stated.
When questioned about intentions toward the resident, Thurtell implied that the obvious conclusion could be an intent to harm or some form of unlawful act. He reassured the public that the current incident appears unrelated to a recent fatal shooting in Canley Heights that occurred on Monday.
The crashed vehicle, along with the police car that sustained damage from the gunfire, has been removed from the scene and will undergo a thorough forensic analysis. A perimeter has been established around St Andrews Road, leading to traffic being diverted in the area.
The search for the passenger continues, with police expressing concerns that he may still be armed, and they are taking precautions as they proceed with their investigation.
