Melton has unveiled a new mega water tank that enhances drinking water access and ensures a dependable supply for the region. This development supports the needs of Melton, one of Victoria's fastest-growing areas, preparing for future expansion.
Today, Steve McGhie, the Member for Melton, had the honor of inaugurating a significant new water tank, an infrastructure project created to endure for a century and to bolster the water supply for the region. This state-of-the-art facility boasts a capacity of 30 megalitres, which is nearly twice the volume of previous tanks and equates to the water needed for 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
As one of the fastest expanding areas in Melbourne, the Melton region is experiencing a considerable population surge. This substantial $24 million investment represents one of numerous initiatives aimed at supporting the growth and development of Melton, which is anticipated to experience a population increase by a notable percentage annually up until 2028.
The newly constructed tank, standing at an impressive height of 11.5 metres and spanning 70 metres in diameter, is designed to ensure the continued availability of safe and reliable water supplies for both current and future residents. This improvement not only addresses the immediate water needs but also positions the community to be resilient in the face of changing demographic trends and climate conditions.
Emphasizing sustainability, the tank has been strategically elevated to enable water to flow downhill naturally, thus supplying the area efficiently. This innovative design leads to significant cost savings and a reduction in energy usage, effectively minimizing carbon emissions and the financial burdens associated with traditional pump stations.
The realization of this project is a collaborative effort between Greater Western Water and Aquametro, with the finishing touches anticipated to be concluded by early February 2025.
In his remarks, Member for Melton Steve McGhie expressed enthusiasm regarding the nearing completion of this vital project, highlighting that the new tank will safeguard the community’s water supply. “It’s invigorating to witness this venture progressing, with nearly double the amount of water soon to be securely stored in the new tank, reinforcing supplies for the Melton community,” he stated.
He further emphasized the importance of this project by noting, “This initiative is pivotal for enhancing our water supplies here in Melton, guaranteeing that we provide safe and reliable drinking water for everyone residing here now and for those who will call this place home in a century’s time.”
