A recent incident of suspected methanol poisoning in Laos has claimed the life of a young UK lawyer, among others. Simone White, a resident of Orpington, Kent, was one of the unfortunate five tourists who reportedly met their end after consuming beverages believed to be laced with methanol during their visit to the backpacker hotspot, Vang Vieng.
Simone White, aged 28, was an accomplished associate lawyer at Squire Patton Boggs in London, where she primarily dealt with technology and intellectual property issues. Her role at the firm encompassed general commercial matters, along with contentious and non-contentious intellectual property law, as disclosed on the firm's official website.
Per her LinkedIn profile, Ms. White had amassed experience across various sectors. She had also been part of the in-house legal team at a publicly listed global outdoor advertising company.
Her professional journey with Squire Patton Boggs, as indicated on LinkedIn, spanned over three years. Initiated as a trainee solicitor in August 2021, she completed her two-year training phase and received a promotion to associate in September 2023. Prior to this, she worked as a paralegal at Clear Channel Outdoor from July 2019 to July 2020. Her association with Squire Patton Boggs can be traced back to a one-month vacation scheme internship in July 2018, which further spurred her inclination towards law.
Ms. White pursued a fast-track LPC at BPP Law School from August 2020 until February 2021. Preceding this, she earned her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Newcastle University in 2019.
Simone White was touring Vang Vieng, a renowned destination for backpackers voyaging across south-east Asia. It is alleged that she, along with several others, consumed beverages tainted with methanol, a lethal substance commonly found in illegally distilled alcohol.
Following the mishap, she was hospitalized but unfortunately, she did not manage to pull through. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has affirmed its support to her family in this challenging period.
Methanol is a tasteless and colourless liquid that bears a close resemblance to regular alcohol in taste. However, even its consumption in minor quantities can lead to fatal consequences.
