The recent assassination attempt on Sukhbir Singh Badal, a prominent figure of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), has been labeled as an attack on the core values of Sikhism, further fueling speculations about an orchestrated plan to undermine the Akali leadership. In response to this alarming event, the SAD's core committee convened and made the decision to reach out to the Governor of Punjab, Gulab Chand Kataria, with the aim of initiating an unbiased investigation into the matter.
Amid heightened security measures, Sukhbir Singh Badal publicly served the 'tankhah', a form of religious penance imposed by the Akal Takht, at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib. This act took place in the Rupnagar district, further emphasizing the importance of the occasion against the backdrop of recent violent events.
The SAD core committee has raised serious accusations against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, suggesting that the attempt on Badal's life was not only planned but also facilitated by senior personnel within the Punjab Police. They allege that Narain Singh Chaura, the individual who attempted the assassination, was allegedly directed toward Badal by police officials. Balwinder Singh Bhundar, acting president of the SAD, remarked that the swift disassociation of the police from Chaura only serves to underline their culpability in this disturbing incident.
The committee has voiced its concerns specifically regarding the actions of the Amritsar Superintendent of Police, Harpal Randhawa, and has outright dismissed the Punjab Police's investigation into the incident as inadequate and biased.
SAD leaders Bikram Singh Majithia and Dr. Daljit Cheema have asserted that the actions of the AAP government appeared to have aided the assailant in reaching Sukhbir Badal. They indicated that SP Harpal Randhawa had attempted to isolate Badal during the initial stages of the incident, even instructing youth leaders and SGPC officials to distance themselves while he was seen in conversation with Chaura.
Furthermore, senior members of the SAD have called into question the involvement of Akali leader Gurpartap Singh Wadala at a Dal Khalsa event in Moga just a day before the incident, demanding clarity from him regarding his position on the unfolding events.
The core committee has criticized the actions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, labeling his response to the crisis as disappointing. They argued that rather than addressing the gravity of the situation following the attack, the Chief Minister chose to downplay the incident.
In a notable mention, the committee expressed admiration for the quick thinking and dedication of Assistant Sub-Inspector Jasbir Singh, who was instrumental in thwarting the assassination attempt. They highlighted that Singh had not been scheduled to be on duty that day and had made his way to Sri Darbar Sahib independently, countering claims made by the Amritsar police commissioner regarding the number of personnel assigned to the shrine.
Addressing the SAD’s allegations of a politically motivated conspiracy, AAP MP Malwinder Singh Kang stated that any wrongdoing would inevitably come to light through the ongoing investigation. He questioned the rationale behind jeopardizing Sikh sentiments, emphasizing the need for transparency in uncovering the truth behind the attempt on Badal's life.
