In a dramatic turn of events this morning, a private helicopter being transported from Kedarnath to Gauchar by an MI-17 chopper crashed near the Mandakini River in Lincholi. The incident occurred when the towing rope used to carry the helicopter snapped, causing it to fall from mid-air. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, and the crash was captured on camera.
The plan was to airlift the defective helicopter to Gauchar airstrip for repairs with the assistance of the MI-17 aircraft. However, shortly after takeoff, the MI-17 began losing balance due to the combined weight of the helicopter and adverse wind conditions. As a result, the helicopter was dropped near Tharu camp, according to an official statement.
The private helicopter had previously made an emergency landing near the Kedarnath helipad in May due to technical issues. Before this incident, the chopper was actively involved in ferrying passengers to the Kedarnath temple. The crash adds to a series of recent challenges faced by the region, including the impact of severe weather.
Since July 31, there has been a significant drop in the number of pilgrims visiting Kedarnath due to extensive damage caused by heavy rains. Rain-induced landslides along the trek route from Gaurikund to Kedarnath left thousands stranded, prompting a large-scale rescue operation involving the Air Force's Chinook and MI-17 helicopters, along with private choppers. Despite the difficulties, pilgrims have continued to arrive at the temple via helicopter.
The Chardham Yatra for this year began on May 10, with the opening of the Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri temples for pilgrims, followed by Badrinath on May 12. To date, more than 33 lakh pilgrims have visited these Himalayan temples. The transportation issues and adverse weather conditions continue to affect travel and logistics in the region.
