Farmers will observe "Prarthna Diwas Ardas Dihada" at the Shambhu Border on Wednesday and a group of 101 farmers will march towards Delhi on December 14.
Protesting farmers at the Shambhu Border between Punjab and Haryana are set to observe a special event called “Prarthna Diwas Ardas Dihada” on Wednesday, December 11, as part of their ongoing agitation. This event, organized by farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, aims to gather support for the farmers’ long-standing demands, which include a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP), loan waivers, pension for farmers and farm laborers, and other rights related to the agricultural sector.
Pandher, in his address to the media, announced that the farmers will hold prayers for the success of their ongoing protest and upcoming actions. He also revealed that a group of 101 farmers will march towards Delhi on Saturday, December 14, as part of the ‘Dilli Chalo’ movement. The group had initially planned to march into Delhi on December 6, but they were halted by the police when tear gas was fired. The protest was temporarily suspended and then resumed on December 8, but it was stopped again due to similar measures by the authorities.
The farmers’ march is being closely watched, with the group planning to continue their struggle for the various demands that they believe are essential for the welfare of the agricultural community. Farmers have been protesting for months, expressing dissatisfaction with the current policies and the government’s handling of their issues.
On Tuesday, Pandher also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Haryana. He claimed that although the PM visited the state, he did not address the pressing concerns of farmers. Pandher pointed out that the government has consistently avoided meaningful discussions on issues like MSP and the plight of the agricultural sector. He urged the government to be more transparent and open about what has been done for the welfare of farmers, suggesting that if the government had implemented any beneficial policies, it should have spoken about them during the PM's visit.
In contrast, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and his government defended their position on MSP, attacking the Congress and opposition parties for their stance on the issue. CM Khattar criticized Congress leaders for promising to buy crops at MSP, while pointing to the failure of Congress-led governments in states like Himachal Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka to ensure full MSP for crops. He also remarked that the people have recognized the reality of these promises and that the public is increasingly rejecting such claims.
The opposition has also been vocal in highlighting the farmers' demands. Leaders have slammed the government for its inability to resolve issues like fertilizer shortages, the MSP guarantee, and other key agricultural concerns. The farmers’ demands also include the withdrawal of police cases filed against them, a halt to electricity tariff hikes, and justice for the victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence, which has become another rallying point for their ongoing protests.
Despite the setbacks and confrontations with the authorities, the farmers remain resolute in their demands. Their planned march to Delhi on December 14 represents their continued push for a more comprehensive and farmer-friendly policy framework from the government.
