Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, DK Shivakumar, mourned the demise of veteran leader and former Chief Minister SM Krishna, describing him as a father figure and the architect of “Nava Karnataka.” Addressing reporters on Tuesday, Shivakumar expressed his gratitude for Krishna’s guidance and pledged to carry forward his legacy.
Shivakumar highlighted Krishna’s numerous contributions to Karnataka’s development, noting his role in building Vikasa Soudha, establishing Udyoga Bhavan for employment generation, and setting up the Karnataka Beverages Corporation to strengthen the state exchequer. He credited Krishna with significant advancements, including Bengaluru’s transformation into the IT capital and a global brand, as well as initiatives like the mid-day meal scheme, Sthree Shakthi, Yashashwini, and the Bhoomi app.

Shivakumar announced that Krishna’s final rites would be held in his native village of Somanahalli in Madduru taluk with full state honors. His mortal remains would be available for public homage at his residence in Sadashivanagar until Wednesday morning, after which they would be displayed in Somanahalli until 3 pm. A three-day mourning period has been declared in the state, and a public holiday has been announced for Wednesday.
The Deputy CM also confirmed that an event to pay tribute to Krishna would be held at Bharat Jodo Bhavan in the KPCC office at 5 pm, and all party events and meetings had been postponed.
Krishna, who passed away at 92, had been unwell for some time and was hospitalized earlier this year. He served as Karnataka Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004, External Affairs Minister from 2009 to 2012, and Maharashtra Governor. In 2017, he joined the BJP after ending his nearly 50-year association with the Congress and retired from active politics last year.
