In a tragic turn of events during an anti-terror operation along the Line of Control in Jammu's Akhnoor sector, Indian Army assault dog Phantom, a Belgian Malinois, was killed in action. The gunfight began early Monday morning when terrorists attacked an ambulance in an army convoy near the Battal area in Akhnoor’s Khour, about 85 kilometers from Jammu city.
As the security forces closed in on the trapped terrorists, Phantom valiantly drew enemy fire, suffering fatal injuries. The White Knight Corps took to social media to honor his sacrifice, stating, His courage, loyalty, and dedication will never be forgotten. The operation led to the neutralization of one terrorist and the recovery of arms.
Phantom, trained as an assault dog, had been posted in Akhnoor since August 2022, after being issued from the RVC Centre in Meerut. Equipped with specialized gadgets, Indian Army dogs like Phantom play a crucial role in scouting enemy locations from close range, often being deployed in high-risk operations.
The attack comes amid a surge in terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir. Over the last two weeks, eight terror incidents have claimed the lives of more than a dozen people, including two soldiers and civilian porters. In one recent incident on October 24, two soldiers and two porters were killed in a convoy ambush near Gulmarg.
Adding to the security challenges, recent attacks have targeted civilians, including a tragic incident on October 20, where seven people were killed at a construction site in Sonamarg. These repeated assaults highlight the region's escalating threats and the ongoing sacrifices of security forces and their canine partners, like Phantom, in the battle against terrorism.
