New York: India captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged that the team did not perform as expected with the bat in the first innings, but he had confidence in their bowling attack. India managed to defend a low total of 119, winning by six runs against Pakistan in a thrilling T20 World Cup 2024 match on Sunday.
The unpredictable pitch at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium proved challenging for the Indian batters. None of them could build a substantial innings except for wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant.
Returning to the Indian team after 16 months, Pant stood out with a 31-ball 42, including six fours. His innings propelled India to a total of 119 all out.
Pakistan remained in contention while Mohammad Rizwan was at the crease. However, the match shifted in India's favor when Jasprit Bumrah bowled Rizwan on the first ball of the 15th over. Pakistan ended their innings at 113/7 in 20 overs.
“We didn’t bat well enough. Halfway through our innings, we were in a good position,” Rohit said after the game. “We didn’t put enough partnerships together and fell short with the bat. We spoke about every run mattering on a pitch like that. There was enough in the pitch. It was a good wicket to be honest, compared to the last game,” added the Indian captain.
India's belief in their strong bowling lineup proved decisive, securing a narrow yet crucial victory in the tournament.
