The stunning images were taken by Gerst in 2018 during his tenure as Commander of the ISS. The photos depict a warm red glow enveloping a portion of Earth shrouded in clouds and darkness. The iconic pinkish-orange hue of the sunset lights up the clouds in Earth's atmosphere, with the night sky gradually encroaching behind them.
The breathtaking images have left viewers in awe. Social media users have expressed their wonder and amazement at the beauty captured in the photos. One user commented, “Simply breathtaking! Alexander Gerst, born on May 3, 1976, in Künzelsau, Germany, is not only an astronaut but also a geophysicist. He joined the ESA Astronaut Corps in 2009, chosen from a pool of 8,413 applicants. His first space mission was in September 2014, as part of Expeditions 40/41’s ‘Blue Dot’ mission.
In 2018, Gerst embarked on his second mission to the ISS. Over the course of his two space missions, he spent a combined total of 363 days living and working aboard the space station. His experiences and the extraordinary images he captured continue to inspire and awe people around the world.
