Police investigating the deaths of two boys in the Blue Mountains have been unable to confirm a key detail after their mother was arrested.
The mother, 42, was arrested at the scene with a number of self-inflicted injuries and taken to Westmead Hospital. Her sons, aged 9 and 11, were discovered at around 12:40 PM in Faulconbridge on Tuesday by their father.
Police are investigating whether the mother suffered a psychotic episode. Her Facebook page shows relatively sparse activity, with recent photos of her children, including a Christmas photo from 2022. She had also shared a mental health fundraiser in 2021 and a message about staying safe at home during COVID-19.
Police have not yet confirmed if a weapon was found at the scene. Blue Mountains Commander Superintendent John Nelson stated it was too early to determine the cause of the incident and confirmed that the boys’ father, who discovered the bodies, is cooperating with the investigation.
Blue Mountains mayor Mark Greenhill expressed the community's sorrow, stating, “Our community has lost two precious souls in the most awful circumstances.” NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb also acknowledged the emotional impact of the case, emphasizing its tragic nature.
Police are not looking for any additional suspects and have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community. Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad are involved in the investigation, focusing on understanding the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
