The Allan Labor Government marks two impactful years of providing no-cost public fertility services, celebrating the birth of 50 babies and extending opportunities for many Victorians, including those in Melton, to build their families.
The Allan Labor Government is thrilled to announce the successful milestone of providing free public fertility care in Victoria for the past two years. This groundbreaking initiative has resulted in the joyful arrival of 50 newborns, showcasing the government's commitment to supporting families and helping Victorians, particularly those in Melton, realize their dreams of parenthood.Since the program's inception in 2022, over 4,300 individuals have embarked on their fertility treatments, with significant outreach to rural areas and multicultural communities. Victorians with financial constraints, regional challenges, and diverse backgrounds can significantly benefit from the service, which covers treatment options such as IVF, IUI, and fertility preservation. New satellite clinics across state enhance accessibility, while Australia’s first public egg and sperm bank amplifies donor services.
Since the establishment of this transformative service in 2022, over 4,300 Victorians have taken their first steps toward fertility treatment. Among these, more than 600 individuals hail from regional and rural communities, emphasizing the program's reach beyond metropolitan areas.
Victoria's public fertility service is dedicated to enhancing access for multicultural communities. Notably, over 20% of those utilizing the service report speaking a language other than English at home, highlighting the initiative’s inclusivity and outreach efforts.
As the service enters its third year, many residents in Melton considering fertility treatment are encouraged to consult their GP or specialist. The program is well-equipped to assist a larger number of families in their journey to parenthood.
This outreach specifically targets individuals and families who stand to gain the most from public fertility care, including those facing financial constraints that make private services unaffordable. Rural and regional residents, diverse cultural groups, LGBTIQA+ communities, and patients whose medical conditions affect their fertility can all find support through this initiative.
The Labor Government is striving to make fertility care more accessible and affordable, assisting Melton families in saving up to $10,000 when starting or expanding their families. The services provided include a variety of fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), intrauterine insemination (IUI), and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), along with fertility preservation options like egg freezing for individuals undergoing medical treatments that may impact fertility.
In partnership with the Royal Women’s Hospital, several satellite clinics have been established in locations such as Epping, Clayton, Sunshine, Heidelberg, Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Mildura, Shepparton, and Warrnambool. This expansion ensures that residents can access fertility care more conveniently, thus alleviating the need for long travel times and associated costs.
The introduction of Australia’s first public egg and sperm bank, inaugurated in July 2023, adds another layer of support for those seeking public fertility services. Located at the Royal Women’s Hospital, this facility offers essential donor options for patients in need of assistance, backed by state-of-the-art laboratory technologies and a team of qualified fertility specialists.
Minister for Health, Mary-Anne Thomas, states, “Welcoming a new baby into the world is an incredible experience, but for some Victorians, this journey isn’t always straightforward – that is why we are making it fairer and easier for more people to start or grow their families.”
Member for Melton, Steve McGhie, adds, “For many families in Melton, this groundbreaking service will save money and time and help them realize their dream of starting or growing a family.”
