Under the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement, young Indian citizens aged 18-30 will now have the opportunity to apply for a one-year work visa starting October 1, allowing them to work, study, and travel in Australia. This initiative is set to strengthen ties and promote cultural exchange between India and Australia.
The recent announcement by the Australian government regarding the issuance of work and holiday visas for Indian citizens marks a significant milestone in the India-Australia relationship. Set to commence on October 1, 2024, this initiative paves the way for young Indian nationals to explore new horizons in Australia, a country known for its diverse opportunities.
Under the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), eligible Indian nationals aged between 18 to 30 years will be able to apply for a one-year visa conducive to work, study, and travel throughout Australia. Up to 1,000 visas will be available each year for this program, making it an exciting prospect for aspiring young professionals.
This agreement not only facilitates the mobility of individuals but also strengthens the people-to-people connections between India and Australia. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized the importance of this initiative during his three-day visit to Australia, highlighting its potential to enhance cultural exchanges and foster new opportunities for young individuals.
Negotiations are underway to transform the ECTA into a more comprehensive framework, termed the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA). This transition aims to further broaden the economic relationship and enhance collaborative efforts between the two nations.
The two countries have set an ambitious goal to elevate bilateral trade to AUD 100 billion by 2030. A commitment to enhance cooperation in various sectors including education and investment was also reiterated during Minister Goyal’s visit. This commitment encompasses multilateral engagements and participation at regional forums, laying down a progressive roadmap for collaborative growth.
In addition to the discussions on Australia-India relations, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry also reported on the sixth session of the India-Egypt Joint Trade Committee. The establishment of cooperative projects in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, electronics manufacturing, and custom matters is indicative of India's growing diplomatic and trade relations globally.
This initiative serves as a testament to the commitment of both nations to not only foster economic ties but also enrich cultural interactions, marking a new chapter in the India-Australia partnership.
