A truck carrying hazardous material exploded into flames on the Logan Motorway in Queensland, sending toxic smoke into the air and sparking a health alert for nearby residents. The incident, which occurred near Kingston and Loganlea just after 8 PM, followed a collision between the truck and an allegedly stolen Audi.
Queensland authorities swiftly issued an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act after thick waves of toxic fumes spread across the area. The authorities also established an exclusion zone to protect residents from the potentially harmful smoke. The motorway was shut down through the night as emergency teams worked to control the situation.
It took eight fire trucks over an hour to bring the fire under control, though efforts to fully extinguish the flames continued into the night. The truck driver managed to escape the wreckage unharmed and was taken to the hospital for precautionary checks.
The Logan Motorway remains closed in the eastbound direction, with diversions in place at Kingston Road. Commuters and the public have been advised to avoid the area this morning, as cleanup operations and investigations continue.
The driver of the stolen Audi remains at large, and Queensland police are urging anyone with information about the crash to come forward.
