British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has come to the defense of King Charles III following a high-profile protest by Independent Senator Lidia Thorpe during the King’s recent visit to Australia. Senator Thorpe’s vocal objections have captured international attention, prompting Sir Keir to commend the King for his efforts, especially in light of his ongoing health challenges.
During an event at Parliament House in Canberra, Senator Thorpe confronted King Charles shortly after he delivered a speech highlighting the contributions of Indigenous Australians. Thorpe, who identifies as a Gunnai, Gunditjmara, and Djab Wurrung woman, shouted powerful messages including, "You are not our king," and "this is not your land," as she advanced toward the stage.
She continued her protest by declaring, “You committed genocide against our people. Give us our land back. Give us what you stole from us — our bones, our skulls, our babies, our people. Give us a treaty, we want a treaty.” Her passionate outcry culminated in the phrase, "F*** the colony," before she was escorted away by officials.
In light of the incident, Sir Keir spoke to the media in London, asserting, “I think the king is doing a fantastic job, an incredible ambassador not just for our country, but across the Commonwealth." He praised the King’s commitment to public service despite his health struggles, which include ongoing treatment for a form of cancer.
Starmer emphasized that King Charles's dedication to his role remains commendable, especially considering his first public appearance in Australia following his diagnosis.
Prior to the protest, King Charles spoke about the importance of reconciliation in Australia, expressing gratitude for the stories and cultures shared by Indigenous peoples throughout his visits. He noted, “In my many visits to Australia, I have witnessed the courage and hope that have guided the nation’s long and sometimes difficult journey towards reconciliation.”
Sir Keir Starmer is scheduled to join King Charles in Samoa later this week for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Despite the controversy, both leaders appear focused on the responsibilities of their respective roles within the Commonwealth framework.
The clash between Senator Lidia Thorpe and King Charles highlights ongoing tensions surrounding colonial history and Indigenous rights in Australia. While King Charles continues to navigate his role amid health challenges, the incident has reignited discussions on reconciliation and the treatment of Indigenous communities in Australia.
