Local Fishers Save the Day'
A young crew member who unexpectedly fell from a cargo ship was found alive off the New South Wales coast last night, thanks to the quick actions of local fishers. This remarkable incident unfolded approximately three-and-a-half kilometers out to sea near Newcastle, 169 kilometers north of Sydney.
The emergency began around 11:30 PM on Thursday when the young man fell from a bulk carrier vessel. His unexpected plunge into the ocean prompted a swift search effort by local authorities. Fortunately, the crew member was discovered by local fishers who were out at sea.
According to Erin Laughton, a paramedic with the NSW Ambulance service, the fishermen spotted the man “waving his arm around” in the water and “bobbing around.” In an impressive display of community spirit, the fishers promptly called for medical assistance and navigated back to shore to meet with paramedics at a nearby boat ramp.
When rescued, the man was wearing a life jacket, which contributed to his survival in the frigid waters. Laughton reported that he was conscious and able to communicate, but suffered from hypothermia and exhaustion due to the cold conditions. Medical teams prioritized warming him up to stabilize his condition.
Upon reaching the ambulance, the medical personnel acted quickly. They placed the man inside where heating units were available, and wrapped him in blankets to combat the hypothermia. Laughton expressed relief in the resolution of the incident, noting the man’s resilience despite the harrowing experience.
This incident exemplifies the critical nature of maritime safety and the importance of community vigilance. The quick thinking of local fishermen not only saved a life but also highlights the risks faced by crew members at sea. As rescue operations continued to evolve, the cooperation between the fishing community and emergency services remains vital in ensuring the safety of those working on the water.
