The Allan Labor Government is dedicated to equipping Victorian children with essential swimming and water safety skills through cost-effective swimming lessons this summer. The VICSWIM Summer Kidz Program is set to open its applications next Wednesday, offering families the opportunity for their kids to learn these vital skills.
The VICSWIM Summer Kidz Program is specifically designed for children aged four to twelve. Families can choose between a schedule of five 30-minute lessons or four slightly longer 35-minute lessons, all conducted over the span of a week, for a nominal fee of just $35.
Children can take part in this initiative at the Melton Waves Leisure Centre, a location that provides a supportive and safe environment for learning. This year, the program aims to reach even more kids, reinforcing the significance of swimming skills and water safety knowledge.
In an effort to enhance the program, an extra investment of $117,000 has been earmarked for providing specialized lessons tailored specifically for children with disabilities and those from multicultural communities. This funding will help create an impressive 400 additional spots for children throughout the state.
This initiative is part of broader measures focused on enhancing swimming safety and ensuring that a greater number of children can receive fundamental water safety training. Last summer, the VICSWIM program successfully accommodated over 16,000 children across 169 swimming centers, with 120 of those located in regional Victoria.
Lessons catering to children with disabilities will be available in six council areas: Darebin, Merri-bek, Frankston, Southern Grampians, Knox, and Whittlesea. Additionally, children from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds can benefit from extra swim lessons in various locations including Bendigo, Merri-bek, Brimbank, Mildura, Casey, Monash, Dandenong, Shepparton, Hobsons Bay, Wodonga, and Hume.
Parents and guardians interested in enrolling their children should be aware that registrations for the VICSWIM Summer Kidz Program will open on November 13. For further information, visit vicswim.com.au.
Member for Melton, Steve McGhie, stated, “The importance of water safety knowledge and swimming skills cannot be overestimated – and this program is making sure all Melton kids have these crucial skills.”
