The Supreme Court of India is set to hear a series of petitions on September 30, aimed at initiating a court-supervised investigation into claims concerning adulterated ghee used in the famous Tirupati Laddu preparation during the previous YSR Congress government.
The Tirupati Laddu controversy has garnered significant attention, as the Supreme Court prepares to address several petitions regarding alleged adulteration in the iconic sweets served at the Tirumala Temple. The case centers on allegations made by the Andhra Pradesh government led by the TDP, which claims that non-vegetarian fats were used in the preparation of these sacred laddus during the tenure of the previous YSR Congress Party.
The upcoming hearing on September 30 will involve a panel of justices reviewing multiple petitions that call for a thorough investigation into this matter. A key piece of evidence presented by former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu indicates that laboratory tests revealed the presence of foreign fats, including those derived from beef and fish oils, in the ghee supplied for the laddus.
Among the petitions submitted, one by Suresh Khanderao Chavhanke, the Editor of Sudarshan News TV, is particularly notable. He argues that utilizing non-vegetarian ingredients in the prasadam violates the fundamental religious rights guaranteed to devotees by the Indian Constitution. Chavhanke requests the formation of a committee, led by a retired Supreme Court judge, to ensure adherence to religious customs in temple management.
Similarly, Surjit Singh Yadav, President of Hindu Sena, calls for a Special Investigation Team to probe the alleged use of adulterated ghee. Yadav contends that the supposed incorporation of animal fat in the laddus has deeply offended many Hindu devotees.
Senior BJP leader Dr. Subramanian Swamy has also entered the fray with his petition, seeking a court-monitored committee to investigate the incident. Swamy emphasizes that the matter should have remained within the jurisdiction of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) rather than being politicized. His petition raises critical questions regarding the integrity of the ghee sourcing and quality control processes.
Another petition comes from YV Subba Reddy, former TTD Chairman and current Rajya Sabha MP. He calls for an independent investigation into the allegations and urges a report detailing the forensic analysis of the ghee samples. Reddy asserts that standard operating procedures are rigorously followed when testing ghee before it's used for prasadam preparation, disputing claims of adulteration.
Lastly, a petition filed by historian Dr. Vikram Sampath and spiritual speaker Dushyanth Sridhar seeks to diminish governmental influence over temple affairs and promote accountability in those managed by state bodies. Their position aligns with a broader call for autonomy of Hindu temples from bureaucratic control.
As the Supreme Court gears up for the hearing, the stakes are high for the involved parties, with the integrity of temple practices and sentiments of millions of devotees on the line.
