Following the withdrawal of support from the National People’s Party (NPP) to the BJP-led government in Manipur, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) has reaffirmed its commitment to the coalition. NPF leader Awangbow Newmai, during a press briefing, underscored their resolve to stand by the government during these challenging circumstances, emphasizing the importance of unity. With five legislators in the 60-member assembly, NPF remains a pivotal partner. The political landscape in Manipur has been tumultuous, as concerns over law and order escalate following the NPP's decision. Amidst these developments, the BJP retains a solid majority with various allied parties.
In a significant turn of events in Manipur, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) has declared its intention to uphold its support for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government despite the recent withdrawal of backing by the National People’s Party (NPP). This announcement came during a press conference held by Awangbow Newmai, NPF’s leader in Manipur and a serving minister within the BJP coalition. He articulated the party's commitment to collaborate with the government during these turbulent times.
During the press briefing convened at his official residence in Lamphelpat, Imphal, Awangbow Newmai, who also oversees the water resource and relief management portfolios, expressed, “Our alliance with the government remains intact, and we will continue to support it.” His remarks reflect the party's dedication to work alongside the state to navigate the ongoing difficulties that have besieged Manipur.
The NPF, which has a contingent of five legislators in the 60-seat state assembly, includes two cabinet ministers: Newmai, representing the Tamei constituency, and Khashim Vashum, who manages the transport, veterinary, and animal husbandry departments. The remaining three legislators are L Dikho (Mao), Ram Muivah (Ukhrul), and Leishiyo Keishing (Phungyar).
In stark contrast, the NPP, the second-largest party in the assembly with seven legislators, has publicly expressed its deep concern regarding the deteriorating law and order situation in Manipur. In a letter directed to BJP president JP Nadda, NPP national leader and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma articulated that the crisis has led to significant loss of innocent lives and widespread suffering among the populace.
He further emphasized, “The current government, under CM Biren Singh's leadership, has failed to address the escalating crisis and restore normalcy.” This statement highlights the growing discontent among coalition partners, raising questions about the government’s ability to maintain stability.
In the aftermath of the 2022 assembly elections, the BJP secured an overwhelming majority with 32 seats, whereas the opposition Congress could only manage five seats. The BJP's position remains strong, maintaining a comfortable majority, which is bolstered by the support of five MLAs from the Janata Dal (United), in addition to the NPF's five and other independent legislators.
Moreover, a local political shakeup was witnessed as eight executive members from the BJP’s Jiribam unit, led by president K Jadu Singh, tendered their resignations. They cited the adverse conditions prevailing in Jiribam and across Manipur as the reason for their departure from the party.
As the political situation in Manipur unfolds, it remains crucial for the government to address the concerns raised by its coalition partners and the public, to ensure both stability and progress in the state. The NPF’s continued support may prove pivotal in navigating the current crisis, but the withdrawal of the NPP presents significant challenges ahead for the BJP-led administration.
