"Our relationship is so strong, you'll understand me without a translation," said Russian President Vladimir Putin, sparking laughter during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kazan, Russia. The two leaders were attending the 16th BRICS Summit, where they emphasized the close ties between India and Russia.
The bond between India and Russia has been built over decades, with strong diplomatic and strategic ties dating back to India's independence in 1947. During their recent meeting, PM Modi and President Putin reinforced this long-standing partnership. The two leaders held discussions on bilateral relations, with Putin commenting on how well the Indian Prime Minister understands him, even without the need for a translator.
Putin highlighted the privileged strategic partnership between India and Russia, emphasizing their collaboration in various areas. He announced that major projects are in progress, including India’s decision to open a Consulate General in Kazan, which is expected to further enhance diplomatic relations.
"Our relationship is built on a solid foundation, and our foreign ministers maintain constant contact," said Putin, as he praised the development of bilateral trade and strategic cooperation.
In his remarks, PM Modi expressed his desire for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. "We believe disputes should be resolved peacefully," said the Prime Minister. He has been involved in efforts to mediate the conflict, having visited both Kyiv and Moscow in the past months. Modi reiterated India’s commitment to peace and stability in the region.
India's role in mediating peace between Russia and Ukraine has received international recognition. US President Joe Biden and several European leaders have praised Modi’s efforts, particularly for his leadership during the G20 and his engagement with the Global South.
The two leaders discussed future prospects, with both countries looking to deepen their partnership. The upcoming intergovernmental commission meeting in New Delhi and ongoing projects are expected to further strengthen ties.
