Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee made headlines on October 22, 2024, after injuring his right hand while smashing a glass bottle during a heated discussion about amendments to the Waqf Board Bill in a joint parliamentary committee meeting. The incident unfolded in New Delhi and quickly garnered media attention.
During the meeting, Kalyan Banerjee became embroiled in a verbal spat with BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay. In a fit of frustration, Banerjee slammed a glass bottle onto the table, leading to cuts on his thumb and little finger. According to reports, he also threw pieces of the broken bottle at Jagdambika Pal, the Chairperson of the committee, prompting Pal to question whether such behavior would escalate to more serious threats in the future.
Following the altercation, Banerjee received first aid for a 1.5-centimeter laceration on his thumb and additional cuts on his little finger. He was escorted from the Parliament’s medical center by fellow MPs Sanjay Singh from AAP and Asaduddin Owaisi from AIMIM, who supported him during his treatment.
Banerjee, who did not comment publicly after the incident but expressed regret privately, has been suspended from the next committee meeting. The decision to suspend him was put forth by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, with the vote resulting in a close 10-8 split along party lines. This decision reportedly upset Gangopadhyay, who indicated he would raise the matter with higher authorities.
In response to the chaos, Jagdambika Pal characterized Banerjee's actions as "criminal" and damaging to parliamentary decorum.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which was tabled in Parliament in August 2024, aims to introduce significant changes to the governance of Waqf properties, including provisions to include non-Muslims on the boards and ensure representation for women. The bill has faced significant opposition, with various leaders describing it as "draconian" and a violation of fundamental rights.
The ongoing debate has seen sharp divisions, not only between the ruling BJP and opposition parties but also among BJP allies, such as Nitish Kumar's JDU and Chandrababu Naidu's TDP, who have expressed concerns over the amendments.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju defended the proposed changes, stating that previous governments had failed to address the issues at hand, necessitating the current administration’s intervention. Government sources maintain that the amendments are designed to empower Muslim women and children who have faced challenges under the existing law.
