Flood waters in several parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have started receding as the states have not experienced any intense rain spells on September 3, 2024. Both state governments are ramping up relief efforts in the affected areas.
Andhra Pradesh has been hit by excessive rainfall over the past four days. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan emphasized the need for special attention in Vijayawada, stating, “We have deployed 262 Panchayati Raj teams for relief and rehabilitation efforts.” Approximately 415,171 people have been affected by the floods in Andhra Pradesh. The government has relocated 43,417 individuals to 163 relief camps across the state and has established 197 medical camps.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for four districts in Telangana—Adilabad, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, and Mahabubabad—for September 4, 2024. Thunderstorms with lightning and strong surface winds are expected in these areas.
Heavy rainfall led to flooding in areas like Miyapur and Alwal, prompting officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to address water stagnation points.
BRS working president KT Rama Rao accused Telangana CM Revanth Reddy of misreporting flood death data. Mr. KTR, through a post on X (formerly Twitter), listed a total of 31 deceased and claimed that the government failed to conduct a proper assessment.
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has deployed a team to Vijayawada for rescue and rehabilitation. Led by GVMC Commissioner P. Sampath Kumar, the team includes various engineers and medical personnel.
Food relief has arrived in flood-hit Vijayawada, and sanitation teams have been deployed to manage the aftermath of the floods.
The water level in Hyderabad’s Hussain Sagar reached 513.65 meters on September 4, 2024, slightly above the Full Tank Level. The IMD has forecasted light to moderate rain or thunderstorms with intense spells for Hyderabad.
Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has criticized the previous YRSCP government for neglecting small irrigation projects and has donated one crore rupees to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. He urged everyone to assist during this crisis and stressed the need for a master plan to prevent future disasters.
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLAs conducted a tour of flood-affected areas in Khammam and criticized the Congress government for its ineffective response. Former Minister Harish Rao expressed strong disapproval of the state government’s handling of the situation.
As the floodwaters recede, the focus shifts to ongoing relief efforts and preparations for possible future weather events. The situation remains critical as authorities work to address the widespread impact of the recent floods.
